Nasopharyngeal tonsil

Tonsils are clusters of lymphoid tissue that are oval in shape and are located in the mucous membrane at the border of the mouth with the pharynx.

There are four types of tonsils according to their location and the presence of a pair.

Paired:

  • palatine (tonsils) - located in a small depression between the tongue and the soft palate;
  • tubal - located in the area of the pharyngeal opening of the auditory tube.

Unpaired:

  • Lushka's amygdala (nasopharyngeal, pharyngeal) - near the vault of the pharyngeal wall;
  • The lingual tonsil is hidden under the tongue, in the back of it.

Tonsils, or tonsils in common parlance, are, as it were, "on the line of fire": they take on the first blow of viral and bacterial agents, performing protective and hematopoietic functions, participating in the development of immunity of the human body.

The pharyngeal - the largest of the tonsils - is in a state of hypertrophy (enlargement without signs of inflammation), has another name - adenoids, and its acute and chronic inflammation is a sign of an infectious disease. As you can see, the functionality of the nasopharyngeal tonsil can be viewed in two ways: from the positive side, and from the negative.

Physiology of the tonsils

When visually examining the oral cavity, only the "silhouette" of the tonsils is visible. Deep pharyngoscopy makes it possible to establish that the tonsils are protected from any negative external influences by a layer of mucus, the so-called "mucous membrane" - a special microscopic sheet consisting of blood and lymph vessels.

The system itself for neutralizing bacteria and viruses is quite simple. At the moment they hit the surface of the tonsils, active immunity is developed. Almost everything "foreign" to the human body is destroyed with the help of antibodies produced by the lymphoid tissue.

If for some reason the tonsils change their shape or size, and most often this is the result of some pathology, then they not only stop performing their protective function, but also pose a serious danger to the life of the body as a source of viral and bacterial infections. In most cases, this ends with a cold, but in the presence of a number of complications, relapses are possible - a manifestation of an acute or chronic form of the disease.

Research results show that hypertrophy of the pharyngeal tonsils (adenoids) is observed in children aged 5 to 12 years. This period is characterized by adenoid growths and vegetation (changes in lymphoid tissue in volume and quality). By adulthood, the pharyngeal tonsil significantly loses in size, and atrophies in adulthood.

Disease prevention involves adherence to the daily regimen, hygiene rules, hardening, and the doctor's competence and a responsible attitude to health will help to avoid surgical intervention.

Next, we will establish the degree of danger to humans of diseases that are associated with damage to the tonsils.

Major diseases

It is well known that the tonsils are the first protective barrier against harmful bacteria and dangerous microbes that enter the human body from the outside. As a result of the weakening of the immune system, their structure and function are changed, and various diseases arise.

Angina or tonsillitis

As noted above, acute and chronic inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsil determines the symptoms of diseases, in this case, tonsillitis (tonsillitis), which is more common in children than among adults. Hypothermia or contact with a carrier of the infection are the main causes of the manifestation of the disease.

There are one and a half dozen types of angina, five of which are extremely dangerous to humans.

Symptoms of a sore throat

The causative agent of the infection, the degree of deformation of the amygdala are symptoms that determine the type and stage of the disease and affect the choice of treatment method.

Common signs of a sore throat:

  1. Sharp sore throat when swallowing, eating, drinking, or talking.
  2. Temperature rise from 37 to 39 degrees.
  3. General malaise, weakness, joint aches, headache, dizziness.
  4. Swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
  5. Lack of appetite.
  6. Redness of the tonsils, palatine arches, uvula (catarrhal sore throat), sometimes the appearance of abscesses or entire areas of accumulation of pus (its lacunar form).

Adenoiditis

The disease lasts 5-6 days, very often turns into an acute or chronic form. It must be remembered that neglect of treatment can lead to complications - inflammation of the middle ear, pharyngitis, laryngitis and various abscesses. Typical symptoms: difficult breathing, sore throat, burning sensation in the nasopharynx, nasal sensation, nasal discharge, hearing impairment.

How to treat inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsil?

Timely access to a doctor, strict adherence to his recommendations, the correct use of antibacterial drugs determine the productivity of treatment, affect its quality, and prevent relapses. In this case, it is necessary to observe bed rest, restrict movement, ensure peace; rinses of the mouth and throat with special herbal decoctions (chamomile, string, sage) are very useful. To relieve pain, you should use special sprays and aerosols, which can be purchased at the pharmacy. For half a year I have been using Casino-X slots.
