How to treat eustachitis at home

Many believe that with a disease such as tubo-otitis, home treatment with folk remedies is not only possible, but also preferable to traditional ones. This common misconception is based on the fact that at an early stage, the patient does not experience severe pain and believes that it is enough to drip into the ear and everything will pass. In fact, the inflammatory process in the auditory tube can proceed actively, but painlessly, until pus collects behind the eardrum. And then you can't do without antibiotics. Therefore, at the first signs of hearing impairment, it is necessary to consult a doctor, and he will already decide by what means to cope with the problem - medication or folk.

Treatment options

Often, when diagnosed with tubo-otitis, treatment with folk remedies is prescribed as an addition to the traditional medication. Such a tandem allows you not to overload the body with drugs and at the same time provide comprehensive and effective treatment. A good effect is given by a combination of vasoconstrictor drugs with herbal alcohol-based tinctures that drip into the ears. Or a combination of proven folk remedies and physiotherapy treatments.

But before deciding on the possibility of using alternative methods, the doctor must conduct a thorough examination and make the necessary tests. Most often, a smear on the microflora is prescribed to identify pathogenic microorganisms and a general blood test to see if the level of lymphocytes is increased.

If, according to the results of analyzes, the infectious nature of tubo-otitis is revealed, folk remedies not only will not help, but can also harm.

It is also important to accurately determine if there is accumulation of fluid and pus behind the eardrum and check its integrity. In case of accumulation of pus, it is in no case to warm up the ear and / or use alcohol-based preparations for instillation. Perhaps, to alleviate the condition, the doctor will decide on perforation of the tympanic membrane and its shunting. And after the active inflammatory process stops and the pus comes out, you can connect traditional methods of treatment.

Treatment of Eustachitis at home should consist, first of all, in strict adherence to all the doctor's recommendations. It is necessary to use vasoconstrictor nasal drops and anti-inflammatory drops in the ear. Sometimes you cannot do without antibacterial drugs. And only after the acute stage has passed, and the body temperature has completely returned to normal, it is possible to continue the treatment of tubo-otitis with folk remedies.

Here are some of the simplest and most effective ways to treat eustachitis at home without the use of medication:

  1. Garlic or onion juice. Possesses the most powerful bactericidal properties, creates unfavorable conditions for the development of pathogenic microorganisms. Contains a lot of vitamin C, which contributes to the active regeneration of cells and tissues. It is used in the form of drops or turunda. Bury freshly squeezed juice into a sore ear 3-5 drops 2-3 times a day. Or grind a clove of garlic (or a small piece of white onion) until gruel, wrap in gauze and carefully insert into the ear canal, leaving for 30-40 minutes. For sensitive skin, moisten gauze with olive or sea buckthorn oil. Important! If there is a perforation or rupture of the tympanic membrane, the procedure cannot be performed!
  2. Herbal tinctures. A properly selected herbal composition can have a very strong anti-inflammatory effect and even lower body temperature. For the treatment of tubo-otitis at home, the following composition of the mixture is perfect: eucalyptus leaves, dandelion root, yarrow herb and lavender flowers. Mix everything in equal amounts. Then 2 tbsp. pour spoons of the mixture with half a liter of boiling water (preferably in a thermos). After the drink has been infused for at least 6 hours, strain it through several layers of gauze and take 2 tbsp. spoons three times a day, preferably 10-15 minutes before meals. And with alcoholic tinctures of eucalyptus and lavender, you can drip your ears, if the integrity of the eardrum is not violated.
  3. Aloe juice and pulp. Aloe is a medicinal plant that simultaneously acts on the focus of inflammation in several directions: it kills pathogenic bacteria, suppresses the inflammatory process, moisturizes and regenerates damaged skin, relieves irritation, pain and itching. But only the lower leaves of a three-year-old or more mature plant are suitable for this. Freshly squeezed juice drip 3-4 times a day, 5-6 drops. Or, wrap the peeled pulp in gauze and put it in the ear. Can be left on for 2-3 hours or overnight. When perforated, the tympanic membrane accelerates its healing. Important! In no case should be used for purulent otitis media!
  4. Tincture of celandine. The bactericidal properties of celandine were used by our grandmothers. An alcoholic tincture of this plant has a double effect - it disinfects the ear canal, eliminating pathogenic microflora and warms up the ear, improving blood circulation and relieving pain. Instill 2-3 drops in a sore ear 2-3 times a day. Then close the ear with cotton wool and wrap with a woolen scarf. This procedure provides deep heating. You can buy the tincture at a pharmacy or make it yourself by pouring half a glass of celandine herb with the same amount of high-quality vodka and insisting in a dark place at room temperature for at least 14 days.
  5. Blowing exercise. Perfectly helps to relieve pressure on the eardrum and relieve the feeling of congestion in the ears. With regular exercise, the noise and ringing in the ears disappear. It must be done very carefully so as not to damage the eardrum. Holding both nostrils tightly with two fingers, try to exhale through the nose. Repeat no more than 3 times in a row. Important! This exercise is effective only in the absence of a runny nose. If the nostrils are blocked, they must be cleaned well beforehand!

With a runny nose and the absence of purulent discharge, a good way to treat tubo-otitis at home is inhalation with soda solution or decoctions of medicinal herbs: chamomile, calendula, celandine, coltsfoot. It quickly relieves swelling and inflammation, perfectly cleans the nose, warms up the sinuses.

If there is no inhaler, then you can breathe over a saucepan with broth, covering your head with a towel. However, it is important to avoid overheating.

Prevention and precautions

It is important to remember that with a disease such as eustachitis, home treatment is possible only with an uncomplicated option. Or with an exacerbation of the chronic form of the disease, when both the causes of the disease and the effective methods of its treatment are precisely established. But even in this case, a preliminary agreement of the treatment regimen with a doctor is necessary.

In no case should tubo-otitis be treated with folk remedies for:

  • ruptured eardrum;
  • acute form of the disease;
  • allergic eustachitis;
  • purulent discharge from the middle ear.

Self-medication can lead to serious complications if the cause of tubo-otitis is systemic or acute infectious diseases, which only broad-spectrum antibiotics can cope with.

With the transition to a chronic form, the primary symptoms almost completely disappear. But tubo-otitis provokes constant tension of the tympanic membrane, due to which it gradually thickens and loses its elasticity. As a result, deafness develops, the extreme manifestation of which can be complete deafness.
