Diseases of the nose

Subtleties of non-surgical treatment of sinus cysts

The presence of a cyst in the sinuses in almost 100% of cases requires surgery. Traditional medicine, medicines and massages are not able to completely eliminate the neoplasm. However, some doctors oppose the operation, as they believe that the asymptomatic course of the disease is best simply observed so as not to injure the mucous membrane once again.

In what conditions is conservative treatment acceptable?

To understand why it is possible to be treated without surgery, you need to figure out what the cyst itself is. This is a benign neoplasm, outwardly it resembles a ball filled with liquid. It is possible to choose conservative methods of treatment because the cyst does not metastasize and does not affect other organs, it is completely safe for the body if it is small and not inflamed.

Such an ailment can affect the nasal cavity for two reasons:

  1. Incorrectly or untimely cured diseases of the tooth and gums. In this case, we are talking about pseudocysts, they are also called odontogenic. With an inflammatory process in the upper jaw, fluid bubbles form to separate healthy tissues from infected ones. Over time, neoplasms can migrate from the dental canals to the nasal sinuses, their shell consists of only one layer of tissue.
  2. Persistent inflammation in the nasal mucosa or paranasal sinus. Such cysts are called true or retention cysts. They are formed from the fact that a blockage occurs in the channels through which mucus is removed from the sinuses. Due to the inability to go outside, the liquid accumulates near the glands, forming a ball with purulent or serous contents. The membrane of a true cyst is two-layered, its inner part consists of epithelial tissue and secretes a secret.

The cyst in the sinus can disappear by itself. This happens quite rarely, mainly with odontogenic neoplasms. They can be completely absorbed after effective dental and gum treatment. It is worth eliminating the root cause, and the neoplasm will disappear.

Small retention cysts may also decrease in size. For their self-destruction, it is necessary to completely cure the inflammation of the sinus or nasal mucosa. However, even after the complete elimination of the root cause, the likelihood of recurrence of the neoplasm is high.

Drug therapy

If a person does not feel much discomfort and a cyst in the nose does not cause complications, then the operation can be postponed. In most cases, neoplasms that do not manifest themselves in any way are diagnosed by chance, when the patient turns to the doctor with complaints and suspicions of completely different disorders. Bubbles smaller than 1.5 cm do not need to be removed. However, to prevent their growth, it is worth constantly taking special drugs. Consider what medicines are used for the non-surgical treatment of sinus cysts.

Group of drugsNameMethod of exposure
Pain relieversAnalgin, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen.They relieve such an unpleasant symptom as pain. Pain syndrome can occur in the area of the affected sinus, give to the temple, eye socket or forehead, and the whole head can also hurt. Pain relievers can help deal with this problem.
Vasoconstrictor"Nazivin", "Vibrocil", "Sanorin".Produced in the form of drops and sprays, they act directly on the mucous membranes, constrict blood vessels and prevent the appearance of edema, which prevents the blockage of new ducts that remove mucus from the sinus.
AntibioticsIsofra, Polydexa.Local agents relieve inflammation and actively fight against pathogenic microbes that provoke an increase in cysts.
AntihistaminesErius, Zodak, Suprastin.Antiallergenic drugs that block the production of substances in the body that react to pathogenic agents, this helps to relieve irritation from the mucous membrane.
Absorbent products"Lidaza".It acts directly on the cyst tissue, destroying it, is not effective enough to completely eliminate neoplasms.

It should be noted right away that if the cause of the formation of a cyst is an allergy, no infusions, juices of herbs and other plants, bee products, etc. cannot be used. All natural substances are distinguished by high biological activity, they can only aggravate the situation and cause serious complications.

If the patient does not have personal intolerance, then you can use the following recipes:

  • Aloe drops. Take the plant and squeeze the juice out of it, strain it well so that no pulp and other extraneous components remain in the liquid. You need to drip the juice directly into the nostrils. The course of treatment lasts six months, with a break every 25 days.
  • Drops from the cyclamen root. You need to take the cyclamen tuber, grate it on a fine grater or interrupt in a blender, squeeze the juice through cheesecloth folded in several layers. 2 drops drip into each nostril.
  • Golden mustache. The dried plant should be boiled or steamed in a water bath. The resulting infusion or broth is dripped into the nostrils from the side where the maxillary sinus is affected.
  • Washing with honey and onion infusion. Grate or beat one medium onion in a blender. Dissolve half a teaspoon of honey in half a glass of boiled water cooled to 40ᵒC, add onion gruel there. The agent is insisted for 5 hours, after which it is thoroughly filtered and used 2 times a day to rinse the nose.
  • Mix for oral administration. Strengthening the immune system from the inside will also be beneficial, especially for preventing cysts from recurring. To prepare the medicine, you need to mix half a liter of propolis tincture with 100 g of celandine juice, add 200 ml of liquid honey there, stir everything. Take the remedy before meals for 1 tablespoon.
  • Herbal infusion. Medicinal herbs also boost local and general immunity. To prepare the infusion, you need to mix lilac flowers, rose hips, wheatgrass root and dried horsetail. All components are taken in equal parts. For 2 tablespoons of the composition, you need half a liter of boiling water. Pour the collection, leave it to infuse in a thermos or a pan wrapped in a towel overnight. In the morning, the infusion is ready for use, drink 1 glass 2-3 times a day.

Puncture and its features

Puncture is shown to be carried out only in a polyclinic. If the cyst in the nose has already increased in size, and the operation is contraindicated for the patient for some reason, this method of treatment can stop the development of the pathology for some time.

For the ENT procedure, a special instrument is used, which is inserted directly into the nasal sinus. The neoplasm is pierced, all the liquid is extracted from it, the mucous membrane is disinfected.

After the puncture, the patient may be given antibiotic therapy to avoid re-filling the sac with pus. However, even the correct drug treatment after the procedure does not guarantee that after a while the cyst will not reappear in its place.

Additional measures

In addition to the fact that a cyst in the nasal sinus can be treated with the help of special procedures, drugs and means, the patient should do everything in his power to prevent its growth or inflammation. For this, preventive measures are used, they consist in following such simple rules:

  • timely treatment of teeth and gums;
  • constant observation by an ENT doctor;
  • timely and high-quality treatment of diseases of the upper respiratory tract;
  • correction of the allergic background;
  • correction of malocclusion in children;
  • treatment of nasal polyposis;
  • prevention of diseases of the nasopharynx.

Dangers and risks

Every patient who refuses to surgically remove a cyst in the nasal sinus should be prepared for the fact that it still has to be done. The neoplasm behaves unpredictably, it is impossible to predict exactly whether it will increase in size and cause complications or not. It is necessary to do an X-ray examination every 6 months in order to respond in time to the slightest changes.

Patients should remember that self-administration of medicines and folk remedies is strictly prohibited.

No physiotherapy procedures related to warming up the nose or sinuses can be done. Heat can only aggravate the situation and cause the cyst to grow rapidly. Therapy is prescribed only by a doctor after a detailed examination and study of all laboratory tests.

Let's summarize

It is impossible to completely cure a cyst in the sinus without surgery. However, in most cases, drug therapy and folk remedies help postpone the operation or completely avoid it.

If the neoplasm does not disturb the patient and does not grow, then preventive measures and conservative treatment can give good results. Observation at the ENT is necessary constantly, when the slightest threat to health is detected, an operation is prescribed.
