It is absolutely safe for the body and can be combined with many other rehabilitation methods, including pharmacological and physiotherapy treatments. But before starting therapy, let's define what a cough is and why it needs to be treated immediately.

What is a cough?

A cough is a reflex reaction of the airways to the accumulation of mucus in the trachea, larynx, or bronchial tree. In most cases, cough is not an independent phenomenon, but a symptom of many dangerous diseases. So, it accompanies colds, tracheitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis and other ailments. In this case, the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract becomes inflamed, as a result of which swelling appears.

The main danger of a prolonged and severe cough in adults is that with bronchospasm, rupture of the epithelium of the respiratory tract can occur. That is why such a symptom should be removed as soon as it appeared. Doctors recommend a comprehensive approach to the treatment of severe cough and take into account:

  • its type (dry / wet);
  • the nature of the cough;
  • duration, etc.

An integrated approach involves the implementation of effective physiotherapy procedures, the use of folk and traditional drug methods. Traditional medicine has a large arsenal of effective and proven remedies. They allow you to get rid of cough not only quickly, but also without harm to the body.

Effective recipes

  1. You need to take one black radish, remove the top (but do not throw it away) and make a small hole in the vegetable using a sharp object (fork, knife, etc.). Pour up to five tablespoons of pure water and a couple of tablespoons of honey into the resulting recess. On top of the hole we close the cut "hat". We leave the radish overnight. The juice should be taken 15-20 minutes before the main meal (at least 4 times a day).
  2. One medium lemon is required. It must be cooked for 10 minutes. Next, squeeze the juice (manually or using a juicer), add a couple of tablespoons of honey and glycerin. The resulting syrup is recommended to be consumed 5-6 times a day, 1 teaspoon.
  3. This folk remedy involves mixing pre-crushed plantain leaves and honey in a 1: 1 ratio. Then the mixture should be put on a slightly warm stove for 4 hours. The result is a delicious and healthy syrup that is consumed 30 minutes before meals. It is ideal for thinning and removing phlegm from the respiratory tract.
  4. Inhalation cough is well treated with eucalyptus or eucalyptus essential oil. Inhalation should be used in conjunction with other treatments. The steam does not fall below the vocal cords and effectively relieves irritation of the mucous membranes.

  6. Squeeze juice from two onions, add about 30 g of honey, 5 tablespoons of sugar. We put on the stove and cook until you get a thick syrup. It must be taken at least 5 times a day.
  7. Another healthy and tasty syrup will help get rid of a cough. To prepare it, take a glass of milk and pour it into a saucepan. We put the dishes on the fire, add 5-6 dates to the milk and cook the syrup. The resulting mixture is consumed before meals in 4 doses.
  8. We take a choice of ginger or mustard seeds. Grind them into powder (a coffee grinder is perfect for this purpose) and take one teaspoon 4 times throughout the day.

  10. A clean cabbage leaf must be carefully spread with honey. Then it is fixed on the chest using an elastic or regular bandage. An improvised mustard plaster perfectly warms the chest and promotes the removal of mucus from the bronchi.

Licorice root for a violent cough

The root of this plant is a wonderful remedy widely used in official and folk medicine. It improves expectoration, promotes mucus excretion. You can use both a fresh root and a dried analogue from the pharmacy.

Licorice root is brewed in a water bath. Its use has no contraindications, so licorice is suitable for the treatment of severe cough not only in adults, but also in children.

Goose fat and bran

  • An infusion prepared on the basis of bran helps to soothe a cough. To do this, take 500 g of bran, pour boiling water (no more than one liter) and strain well. Let the infusion cool. It is recommended to drink the drink in small sips during one day. We repeat the procedure the next day.
  • Goose fat can not only soften but also completely cure a lingering cough. The chopped onion is mixed with a couple of tablespoons of goose fat, gently rubbed into the chest and neck just before bedtime. True, such a remedy is suitable for those who are treated at home. It's all about a rather pungent onion smell - it is very persistent and does not wash off well. The resulting mixture can be used not only externally, but also internally, one teaspoonful at night.

Don't forget about honey

Honey - as one of the most versatile remedies - is able to effectively fight a severe cough. Therefore, this non-perishable product is included in a large number of recipes.

  1. Honey with hazelnuts will help reduce the intensity of the cough. For this we need one glass of nuts. The nuts are ground and mixed with 75 g of honey. The mixture is consumed during the day, one teaspoon. You need to drink the product with warm milk.
  2. In a glass of heated water, add one tablespoon of flower honey, a couple of tablespoons of anise seeds and a little salt. The water is brought to a boil and cooled. Drink one teaspoonful drink 5 times a day.

  5. Squeeze juice from one fresh onion, mix it in equal proportions with honey. Syrup is consumed 3 times a day before the main meal. This recipe is indispensable for a strong wet cough.

Honey and egg yolk

A very good remedy that few people know about is a mixture based on egg yolk and honey. Add one glass of fresh milk to the saucepan and bring it to a boil.Then put one tablespoon of honey and butter, pour in raw egg yolk (pre-beaten) over the tip of the knife.

To make it easier to beat the yolk, add a few drops of hot water to it. All of these products are combined with boiling milk while it is on the stove. In this case, you need to intensively mix the substance.

It is recommended to prepare such a cocktail at least twice a day (preferably more often) and take it only warm.

Unjustifiably forgotten recipe

Many people overlook such a simple, safe and very effective way of treatment, like the use of burnt sugar. We are so accustomed to potent pills that sometimes we do not even pay attention to the sugar candies that we loved so much in childhood.

Put the required amount of sugar in a medium-sized frying pan and melt it on the stove. Do not let the sugar turn black during processing, otherwise it will be too bitter. Hardened lozenges are consumed immediately (placed under the tongue) or dissolved in water and taken in liquid form.

Physiotherapy on the watch for your health

Various methods of physiotherapy will help you quickly cope with a strong cough and relieve the inflammatory process. They have a positive effect on the entire body - they improve blood circulation in the tissues of the respiratory tract and soothe the severe dry cough that prevents you and your loved ones from falling asleep at night.

What physiotherapy methods are most effective:

  1. Inhalation. They perfectly warm up the mucous membrane, relieve inflammation in the respiratory tract and help to reduce the frequency of coughing attacks. Medicinal herbs are well suited as a basis for inhalation:
  • chamomile;
  • calendula;
  • Linden;
  • St. John's wort, etc.
  1. Instead of herbs, ordinary salt, soda and iodine can be added to hot water. These ingredients in the complex have an anti-inflammatory and pronounced antibacterial effect. To make the treatment as effective as possible, we recommend doing inhalations at least 3 times a day for 10 minutes.
  2. UHF. This therapeutic method warms up the airways. As a result, the inflammatory processes noticeably fade away, and bouts of severe coughing appear less and less frequently.
  3. Breast massage. Manual therapy has a beneficial local effect and improves blood supply to the chest. It relieves inflammation and accelerates recovery. The optimal frequency of massage is at least once a week.
  4. Electrophoresis. It involves the targeted heating of the inflamed area using electrical impulses. As a result, blood circulation improves, the area of inflamed tissues is significantly reduced.
  5. Medical banks are one of the best, but unjustifiably forgotten method of physiotherapy. Its use improves the functioning of the respiratory system and minimizes the effects of coughing. Banks perfectly relieve inflammation of the airways by stimulating blood circulation. They are placed on the chest once a day.

Useful compresses

A bad cough will not be a problem for children and adults if you pay attention to a proven method of treatment such as a compress. Popular recipes:

  • We dilute apple cider vinegar in warm clean water, add a tablespoon of honey. Dip gauze or a soft cloth in the resulting solution and apply it on the chest and back (while we recommend avoiding the heart area). Cover the gauze on top with plastic bags for greater tightness and warm natural fabric. After 20 minutes of application, remove the compress, wipe the body dry (it is advisable to put the compress just before bedtime).
  • Take 3 potatoes and cook with the peel. During the cooking process, add one spoonful of sunflower oil, turpentine and ethyl alcohol. From the resulting mass, we make a couple of cakes and wrap them in cheesecloth. Apply the compress to the patient's back and chest.
  • The patient should be well wrapped in a warm blanket and put to bed for one hour. Then the compress is removed, and the chest and back are rubbed until visible redness. This recipe is very effective, however, this compress should be applied 3 times in a row.

Diet with a strong cough

Few people know, but success in the fight against cough largely depends on the correct diet. With severe bronchospasm, nutritionists advise eating mashed potatoes and liquid oatmeal porridge in milk. These dishes will help you quickly relieve coughing attacks. It is also recommended to eat radish chopped on a grater, seasoned with sour cream, olive or sunflower oil. It is a very powerful antimicrobial agent.

Pay attention to the grapes. Sunberry is also effective for severe coughs. Grapes have a healing effect on the lungs, promotes the formation of phlegm and its expectoration. Therefore, it is recommended to use it for colds, which are accompanied by intense coughing fits. You can eat grapes in their pure form or drink grape juice with one teaspoon of honey.

According to doctors, when coughing, it is better to give up coffee and give preference to a barley drink with milk and chicory. It helps to get rid of bronchospasms, crushed together with the peel, lemon, mixed with honey. As for spicy food, then it must be completely excluded from the diet.

It is not recommended to consume sugary drinks and sweets - such food only aggravates the cough and interferes with the excretion of phlegm.

And, of course, with severe coughs and colds, you need to drink a lot of fluids and, if possible, bring the daily volume of its consumption to 2.5 liters. This will help reduce inflammation in the airways.

As such a liquid, you can use:

  • tea with honey;
  • raspberry tea;
  • herbal decoctions;
  • warm boiled water;
  • juices;
  • fruit drinks;
  • compotes.

If you have a strong cough in both children and adults, do not forget to regularly ventilate the room in which the patient is located. You should forget about long walks in the fresh air for a while. Another important point is that you need to periodically change your underwear, as well as bedding.

A few words in the end

Alternative methods, perhaps, are somewhat inferior in effectiveness to the traditional pharmacological treatment of cough, but their use is safer for the body. In addition, you should not focus solely on coughing, because in many cases it is just one of the symptoms of the disease. The best option is to see a doctor. He will help you choose an effective treatment regimen and monitor the rehabilitation process.
