Runny nose

Warming up the legs with nasal congestion

Mustard is a proven folk remedy that has many uses. Surely most adults will remember how they poured mustard into their socks at night if they happen to get cold, or apply compresses to relieve pain. In many families, mustard has been and remains an indispensable home remedy. However, its benefits are recognized not only by alternative medicine - a description of the properties of mustard powder as an irritant drug can be found in most pharmacological reference books. Is it permissible to soar your feet with a runny nose using this remedy? What recipes are most helpful?

Mustard and runny nose

Mustard has been considered a medicinal plant since the time of Hippocrates. Later, along with its use in cooking, the study of its beneficial properties was continued - for example, one of the medieval English doctors argued that mustard seed can be used as an antidote, pain reliever. Mustard can be purchased at any pharmacy these days without a prescription. Its low cost and ease of use have made it a popular home remedy - including for the common cold.

A runny nose, or rhinitis, an inflammatory process in the anatomical boundaries of the nasal mucosa, most often appears as a result of a cold. But the cold is only a contributing factor, the real provocateurs of inflammation are viruses and bacteria. They can enter the body from the outside or are constantly on the surface of the mucous membrane (this applies mainly to bacterial agents). At the same time, the cause of the common cold can be:

  • allergy;
  • injury;
  • dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system;
  • chronic infectious or non-infectious inflammation.

It is not difficult to assume that the warming effect of mustard remedies is only useful for infectious rhinitis, especially if the patient has noticed symptoms as a result of a cold. Mustard is useless and even harmful for allergies, vasomotor rhinitis, and even more so, in the presence of injury. Therefore, thinking about the need for procedures with mustard, you must first understand the nature of nasal congestion.

Thus, it is worth warming your feet with a runny nose if the symptoms arose as a result of hypothermia.

Application result

How does mustard medicine work on a person? There are several main effects:

  1. Warming.
  2. Distracting.
  3. Annoying.

When mustard powder is added to warm water, an active substance is released - an essential oil, which can irritate the nerve endings of the contact area of the skin, causing increased blood circulation, metabolic processes, and a sharp blood flow.

It is known that the systems of the body, in one way or another, are interconnected. The lower limbs and upper respiratory tract are no exception to this rule. Reflexogenic zones are located on the soles of the feet, the impact on which inevitably causes a reaction from the mucous membrane of the nose and pharynx. Thus, even local hypothermia of the feet will affect the state of the respiratory system and can provoke a runny nose, and irritation and warming can help get rid of it.

Is it possible to soar legs with a runny nose? In most cases, the answer should be yes if you have a cold. But not everything is so simple. Foot baths are the same medical procedures as electrophoresis or, for example, laser therapy. Before starting treatment with their help, you need to understand what is the purpose of using a mustard bath, if there are any contraindications.

Carrying out the procedure

Foot bath

How to soar your feet correctly? Several conditions must be met:

  1. The ratio of water to mustard.

The calculation is made for 1 bucket (on average 12 liters) of water. This volume is poured into a clean, pre-prepared bowl, add from 50 to 100 grams of mustard.

  1. Water temperature.

It should be around 45-50 ° C.

  1. Duration of the procedure.

Warm your feet for 20 minutes, during which time it is worth wrapping yourself in a blanket or blanket.

During the procedure, the patient should feel a pleasant warmth; if the water has cooled too quickly, add a little hot, but do not add a new portion of mustard powder. Moderate redness of the skin of the legs is absolutely normal if there is no pain. When the warm-up time comes to an end, you need to rinse your feet with warm clean water, wipe dry with a clean towel, put on warm socks and go to bed.

Dry powder

Dry mustard powder is poured into socks overnight. It is believed that such a procedure warms up as much as a foot bath. But it should be understood that only a small amount of dry powder is safe: if moisture appears (of any origin, even sweat), active substances will begin to be released. Warming will be followed by trauma - skin burns.

Having started to warm your legs, in no case do not tolerate pain - it can be a sign of a thermal or chemical burn.

Stop the procedure immediately, rinse your feet to remove any mustard residue, and if symptoms persist, consult a doctor.

Contraindications

How to soar your feet with mustard? Since the indication for the procedure - a cold rhinitis - has been clarified, and the recipes have been studied, it is worth clarifying if there are any contraindications:

  • fever;
  • injuries to the skin of the legs;
  • inflammatory, including pustular diseases of the skin of the legs;
  • neoplasms in the area of the skin of the legs;
  • high blood pressure at the start of the procedure;
  • individual sensitivity, allergies.

Fever is a companion of acute respiratory infections, exacerbation of chronic inflammatory diseases of the respiratory system. Even local warming procedures prevent the body from shedding excess heat, which means that they are associated with the risk of hyperthermia (overheating) - a life-threatening condition.

Vaping should be avoided if the patient is a small child, since he will not always be able to correctly describe the complaints, even if something goes wrong during the procedure (for example, the water is very hot). Also, children have an extremely high risk of overheating.

With a cold, you should not rely only on mustard; treatment should be comprehensive and systematic. Having learned how to soar your legs with mustard, do not forget about the likelihood of contraindications - it is best to discuss the upcoming procedure with your doctor.
