Treatment methods for adenoids

Lymphoid growths of the pharyngeal tonsil are hypertrophied tissue and are called adenoids. The task of the tonsils is to protect a person from the penetration of infection into the body. Normally, lymphoid formations are able to increase in diameter, thereby strengthening the barrier between pathogens and the body.

The appearance of adenoids is fraught with the development of serious complications, so parents need to think about how to treat adenoids as early as possible.

There are three degrees of hypertrophy of the lymphoid tissue of the tonsils:

  • the first degree is characterized by a decrease in the lumen of the nasopharynx by a third, which is manifested by difficulty in nasal breathing. When the child goes to bed, the adenoids can change their position and slightly improve breathing. Already at this stage, parents should go for a consultation with an otolaryngologist, without waiting for complications;
  • the second degree, when the lumen of the nasopharynx is halved, is manifested by nasal congestion, and only occasionally can the child breathe through the nose. Snoring may be noticed at night. As the adenoids increase, they narrow the lumen of the Eustachian tube, from which hearing deteriorates in children;
  • in the third stage, nasal breathing is absent, so the child is constantly breathing through the mouth. During sleep, parents may notice periods of apnea, when the child stops breathing for a few seconds, and then begins to breathe avidly. Hearing worsens even more.

To suspect a disease, parents need to pay attention to breathing, sleep and the general condition of the child. With adenoids, you can notice the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty nasal breathing, up to its complete absence;
  • nasal congestion;
  • snoring during sleep;
  • headache;
  • inattention, absent-mindedness, which is a consequence of brain hypoxia;
  • bad sleep, because of which the child wakes up moody, and goes sleepy all day.

In addition, the adenoids can become inflamed, causing pain when swallowing and fever. If a child does not visit a doctor in a timely manner, not only the ENT organs, but also the internal organs (brain) may be affected.

An otolaryngologist can recommend an operation if drug treatment is ineffective, adenoids grow rapidly and complications appear:

  • hearing loss. Chronic otitis media develops due to swelling and narrowing of the Eustachian tube, which disrupts its airway function. As a result, the reproduction of pathogenic microbes begins in the middle ear section, and inflammation develops;
  • apnea;
  • frequent adenoiditis, exacerbation of tonsillitis, pharyngitis and sinusitis;
  • the adenoid face is formed due to the lack of the possibility of nasal breathing. The child becomes so accustomed to breathing through the mouth that his jaw stretches, the bite changes, and his face becomes tired and dejected.

Homeopathic remedies

Homeopathic medicines are a good help in the treatment of adenoids. Of course, you should not expect a quick effect from them, since the action develops slowly, so the treatment course is at least a month.

The treatment uses:

  • Lymphomyosot;
  • Echinacea compositum;
  • Sinupret;
  • Traumeel.

The action of the drugs is aimed at eliminating the infection, reducing lymphoid growths, reducing the degree of inflammation and swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa. Separately, it should be noted the mild immunostimulating effect and activation of lymph drainage.

Systemic therapy

Vitamin therapy is of particular importance in treatment. It makes it possible to normalize the quantitative and qualitative composition of vitamins, as well as to strengthen the immune defense. For this, the child can be given Aevit, Supradin or Pikovit.

In addition, the following medications are needed:

  • antihistamines (Claritin, Cetrin, Loratadin), which reduce tissue swelling and mucus production;
  • antibacterial drugs are prescribed if the doctor has confirmed bacterial inflammation using microscopic and bacteriological tests. Of antibiotics, children can use Augmentin, Sumamed, Cefuroxime, but only a doctor selects the dosage;
  • antiviral drugs with immunomodulatory effects (Aflubin, Otsilokoktsinum).

The duration of drug administration depends on the degree of proliferation of the adenoids and the effectiveness of therapy.

Local therapy

Medicines for the treatment of adenoids are selected by the doctor based on the results of the diagnosis and taking into account the severity of the disease. To normalize nasal breathing in a child, you need to engage in rinsing and instilling the nose. Fight the infection that maintains constant inflammation in the adenoids with antiseptic agents. They are available in the form of nasopharyngeal lavage solutions. After cleaning the mucous membrane, apply astringent and anti-inflammatory drops.

For local treatment, the following will be used:

  • Protargol. The drug is available in the form of nasal drops, has an anti-inflammatory effect and strengthens the local immune defense;
  • Nasonex refers to hormonal drugs, available in the form of a spray or drops. Its action is aimed at reducing the severity of edema and inflammation;
  • Avamis has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect and belongs to hormonal agents;
  • Collargol has antiseptic, astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be purchased at the pharmacy as a powder, solution, or drops;
  • drops from adenoids with a vasoconstrictor effect reduce the lumen of blood vessels, swelling, which allows you to restore nasal breathing. Among such drugs, the spray Nazivin, Otrivin, Delufen, Pinosol or Vibrocil is considered effective;
  • local immunomodulators - IRS-19, Immudon, Nazoferon.

It should be understood that any administration of drugs into the nasal cavities, either drops, or a spray, should be carried out on the cleaned mucosa. Rinsing the nasal cavity and nasopharynx can be carried out using pharmacy solutions or prepare them yourself:

  • ready-made rinsing products - Aqua Maris, Humer, No-salt. These are solutions of sea salt, therefore, they clean and disinfect the mucous membrane well;
  • To prepare a rinsing solution on your own, it is enough to dissolve 2 g of sea salt in 250 ml of warm water. It is necessary to achieve complete dissolution so that the salt crystals do not injure the mucous membrane;
  • decoction of medicinal herbs. In a glass of boiling water, you can brew 10 g of chamomile or oak bark. It should be insisted for about a quarter of an hour, after which it is necessary to filter and rinse the nasopharynx twice a day.

With the development of otitis media as a complication of adenoids, ear drops, for example, Sofradex or Otipax, should be used.

Physiotherapy procedures

To quickly get rid of the symptoms of adenoids, it is advisable to combine medication with physical therapy. Its action allows you to enhance the effect of drugs and accelerate recovery. ENT doctors recommend:

  • laser therapy, the advantage of which is a powerful bactericidal effect. Decrease inflammation occurs due to the death of microbes and the warming effect of the laser. To act directly on the adenoids, a light guide tube is used. Laser therapy through the bridge of the nose does not lead to the desired result;
  • ozone therapy, which prevents the reproduction of pathogens, enhances local immunity and accelerates the healing process of tissues, stimulating regeneration;
  • ultraviolet irradiation. UFO sessions allow you to kill microbes that accumulate in the folds of the mucous membrane;
  • high-frequency currents of continuous or pulsed nature, the action of which is aimed at reducing inflammation and stimulating immunity. The greatest effect is observed with exacerbation of adenoiditis;
  • magnetotherapy - to stimulate regeneration, accelerate the healing of the mucous membrane and increase the immune defense;
  • electrophoresis, due to which drugs can be injected through the skin directly into hyperplastic tissues;
  • EHF-therapy is based on the action of electromagnetic waves. It is prescribed to reduce edema and stimulate local immunity.

Traditional therapy

Traditional medicine recipes help to enhance the effect of medicines and independently provide a powerful healing effect. In treatment for washing, you can use:

  • propolis. 20 drops of tincture should be diluted in 220 ml of warm water, then add 2 g;
  • tincture of calendula (5 ml) is diluted in half liters of salted water (5 g of salt per 450 ml of warm water);
  • 15 g of chamomile flowers and linden (30 g) are infused for a quarter of an hour in 240 ml of boiling water;
  • 15 g of chamomile, mint, sage 30 g each is poured with 750 ml boiling water for a quarter of an hour. After that, the infusion should be filtered and used for washing.

After washing the nasopharyngeal mucosa, therapeutic agents with a local effect should be used:

  • Kalanchoe juice diluted with water (1: 1). You need to drip 3 drops into each nasal passage. To increase the effect, it is necessary to add honey of a liquid consistency;
  • sea buckthorn oil should be dripped in 3 drops;
  • honey with beet juice (1: 2), 3 drops can be instilled into each nasal passage.

Preventive actions

The best cure for adenoids is prevention. You can maintain good health and greatly enhance the immune defense using the following recommendations:

  • do not neglect artificial feeding;
  • you need to temper children from a young age;
  • timely treat chronic infection (pyelonephritis, tonsillitis);
  • parents should control the nutrition of their children;
  • physical exercise, sports sections;
  • favorable environment (no stress, hypothermia, dryness and air pollution);
  • breathing exercises.

We focus on the importance of the climatic factor. It is advisable to annually rest on the seaside or to strengthen the immune system in a forest area. This will benefit not only children but also parents.
