Folk remedies for a wet cough - the most effective recipes

With the arrival of autumn, colds are activated, which are quite often accompanied by a cough. If it is accompanied by sputum discharge, it is usually called wet. This symptom is typical for many diseases of the respiratory tract. Regardless of the source, a wet cough needs to be treated and done right.

In addition to medicines, you can try folk remedies for a wet cough. Their effectiveness has been tested by time. They are safer for the body than traditional remedies, and can be of great help in complex treatment.

Why it is important to treat a wet cough

The main goal of therapy in this case is to remove mucus from the bronchioles and bronchi. This is a paramount task, since sputum contains many decay products of pathogenic microorganisms. Together with harmful toxic substances, they negatively affect the general condition of the patient and significantly slow down the treatment. According to microbiologists, mucus stagnant in the bronchi is an ideal environment for the development of viruses and harmful bacteria.

In addition, phlegm in the bronchioles makes it difficult for gas to exchange in the lungs. But before you try folk remedies for wet coughs, it makes sense to determine the cause of this symptom.

Causes:

  • ARVI or ARI are common seasonal illnesses. Their constant companions are: cough, perspiration, sore throat, fever and runny nose. Doctors recommend supplementing treatment with antiviral medications.
  • Another possible cause is whooping cough. This disease is also accompanied by bouts of severe coughing with sputum production.
  • Chronic bronchitis often worsens several times a year (especially in the off-season). He is characterized by prolonged attacks of coughing with the release of pus and mucus.
  • Sinusitis and rhinitis. A cough with such ailments appears due to mucus that enters the larynx from the nasopharynx. As a rule, seizures are especially acute at night during sleep or immediately after waking up in the morning.
  • Pneumonia is a dangerous disease with severe complications. Weakness and aches throughout the body, drowsiness, fever and a wet cough are typical symptoms.

Tuberculosis is also characterized by a violent cough. The attacks are accompanied by profuse sputum with blood clots.

Treatment is the right tactic

According to experts, the choice of tactics for treating a wet cough depends entirely on its characteristics and associated diseases. The main task in this case is to create optimal conditions for quick and safe excretion of sputum. Therefore, it is quite often necessary to stimulate the formation of mucus. This is done with the help of special medications. They thin the mucus and aid in its excretion.

But drug treatment can and should be supplemented with folk remedies. An integrated approach delivers better performance. And by themselves, folk methods for the most part have a more gentle effect on the body.

A few words about compresses and rubbing

Colds with a wet cough are quite effectively treated with rubbing, as well as compresses. Both of these agents accelerate the expectorant processes, promote warming of the chest and profuse sweating. To do this, you need badger / goose fat or the most common lard.

One of the named components must be heated by means of a water bath (no need to boil). Then add some honey and vodka. The resulting mixture must be rubbed into the chest, under the shoulder blades and into the back of the head. After that, we wrap the patient in a warm cloth (a large towel will do) and put him in bed. The procedure itself lasts from 30 minutes to one hour, the compress does not need to be washed off.

Another very effective cough remedy is potato tortilla. To do this, boil unpeeled potatoes and crush them in a bowl. Then the resulting puree is wrapped in gauze or any other thin cloth and applied to the chest and back. The procedure takes one hour. In this case, it is best to be in bed.

Compress based on honey and mustard

Quite often honey and mustard are used for the compress. You will need mustard powder to make it. It is mixed with flour (the variety is not important), then honey and any vegetable oil (olive, sunflower, etc.) are added. As a result, a mushy mixture is formed.

The gruel is applied on several layers of gauze, applied to the back and chest. In this case, the patient should be wrapped in a towel (you can use a bandage) and put to bed.... The compress lasts no more than an hour, after which it must be washed off. If there is severe skin irritation and burning pain, wash off the compress immediately.
