Throat medications

Can I take throat pills during pregnancy?

Pregnancy of a woman always captures either the spring or autumn period of exacerbation of respiratory diseases. Some are "lucky" to get into all the dangerous seasons of colds. And it is not always possible to pass them without unpleasant consequences. Logically, the question arises of how to overcome the disease as soon as possible and at the same time not harm the baby. You can use unconventional methods, or you can take medicine. But in that, and in another case, you must adhere to certain rules. What are these rules, what medications can be used by expectant mothers, we will tell further.

Alternative to pills

If you recognize the early symptoms of a cold and your temperature is within normal limits, there are several proven home remedies that you can try for a minor sore throat. This can be dry wraps with a warm and soft cloth or a scarf. To enhance the effect, it is suggested to rub the neck with mustard balm or another safe warming agent.

A glass of warm milk with a lump of butter and a spoonful of honey will help for a sore throat during pregnancy. The remedy is drunk before bedtime, immediately wrapped in a blanket. It not only relieves pain, but also helps fight coughs.

A time-tested remedy is inhalation. You can add coltsfoot, calamus root, eucalyptus, calendula, sage, chamomile and other medicinal herbs to them. Use either one plant or a mixture of several. For one serving of inhalation, take a liter of water and two tablespoons of any herb. The mixture is poured into a wide saucepan, poured with boiling water and the vapors are inhaled by throwing a towel over your head. It is recommended to use herbs and not oils. The latter can cause allergic reactions. The procedure is carried out within 10-12 minutes.

If you are not happy with the prospect of sitting over a steaming saucepan, get a nebulizer at the pharmacy - a special device that makes the procedure as safe as possible.

Gargling with soda and saline is ideal for treating sore throat for pregnant women. For a glass of warm water, it is enough to take half a teaspoon of baking soda and a spoonful of salt.

Gargling is allowed with infusions and decoctions of herbs. A tablespoon of any of the above medicinal plants is poured with a glass of boiling water and insisted for about half an hour. The product must be drained, cooled to room temperature and only then gargled. The procedure lasts 2-3 minutes and is repeated every 2-3 hours.

Possible complications with improper treatment

Only a doctor can diagnose ARVI or ARI and prescribe adequate treatment. If the disease is treated incorrectly, complications can arise. As a rule, these are more serious diseases of the respiratory tract: pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis. In turn, acute tonsillitis threatens the development of rheumatism, endocarditis, kidney disease, phlegmon and even inflammation of the appendix.

Therefore, you should not postpone the visit to the doctor, waiting for the usual sore throat to grow to dangerous proportions. Start with at least basic home remedies and follow the rules for their use.

What absolutely should not be done

Home remedies can prevent the development of the disease if the sore throat is mild. But even in this case, it is important to know what is possible for pregnant women, and what is categorically impossible, so as not to harm the child.

  1. Try not to overheat, in any case do not soar your feet, do not take a hot bath, especially if you have a high body temperature.
  2. Don't overdo it with vitamins. Everyone knows that a loading dose of vitamin C helps with colds. But an excess of it, like any other vitamin, can cause an allergic reaction, especially in pregnant women.
  3. If folk remedies do not help, do not prescribe pills yourself. Only a doctor can allow medication to be taken during pregnancy. But even in this case, do not be too lazy to read the instructions for use of the drug, especially the section on contraindications and administration during pregnancy.

Remember, even if you have treated a sore throat and runny nose a thousand times with a proven method or medicine, still see your doctor for these symptoms. During pregnancy, the body can react in a completely different way to the usual means.

What doctors usually prescribe

In the case of a pregnant woman, doctors try to find the safest drug that is allowed even for children. If the symptoms of the disease are not acute, rinses with saline, furasol or furacilin solution may be prescribed. They have no side effects, while a positive effect on the body has been proven for a long time.

Of the medicines, sprays or lozenges are usually prescribed. Among the popular safe means are the following:

  • "Orasept" is a spray that is prescribed even to infants.
  • Ingalipt is a spray that relieves swelling of the throat. Also suitable for the treatment of children under the age of one year.
  • Faringosept is an antiseptic that fights the symptoms of many diseases.
  • Herbal lozenges. But they must be taken with caution, as allergies may appear.
  • Lollipops "Doctor Mom", which relieve pain due to special phytocomponents.
  • "Bronchicum" is a drug that is used to treat, including small children.
  • "Cameton" or "Givalex", created on a natural basis.

It is also permissible for expectant mothers to use expectorants such as Stodal and Herbion syrups, and Mukaltin tablets. The drugs Travesil, Teraflu, Strepsils, Bioparox are strictly prohibited.

What to do with fever

A sore throat is sometimes accompanied by a fever. It is not recommended to do anything about this if the temperature does not reach 38 degrees. As soon as it passes this mark, doctors prescribe antipyretics, usually based on paracetamol. It is important not to use aspirin-based medicines!

Try to bring down low temperatures with folk remedies. By the way, doctors first recommend the use of alternative medicine for expectant mothers, and if they do not help, they prescribe pills.

Of the effective "grandmother's" means usually help:

  • Cranberry tea - two tablespoons of cranberries mashed with honey (teaspoon), filled with a glass of hot water. Sometimes it is recommended to take less water for a greater concentration of the product.
  • Frequent hot drinking of tea based on medicinal herbs (raspberry leaves, calendula flowers, linden).
  • Wipe off with a towel dipped in warm, clean water. Please note that there should not be any vinegar or alcohol in it.
  • Freshly squeezed beetroot or carrot juice.

I would like to repeat once again that even with minor symptoms of a cold, you need to see a doctor. It is especially important to do this early in pregnancy.

If you are just planning to become a mother, you need to do the prevention of colds in advance: temper, adjust your diet, saturate it with vitamins. During pregnancy, try to contact sick people less during the cold season, do not overcool.

Be attentive to your health and that of your child. Listen to the advice of your doctors.
