How to cure lingering rhinitis in adults

Constant nasal congestion and rhinorrhea prevent a person from living fully, communicating normally with people around him, working and sleeping. As a result, not only his physical condition suffers, but the emotional side. The person becomes irritable, there is a frequent change in mood and performance decreases. How to treat a lingering rhinitis in adults?

To quickly get rid of the symptoms of chronic rhinitis, you first need to establish the cause of the disease:

  1. bacterial infection. It often joins against the background of viral inflammation of the nasal mucosa with a weakening of the local immune defense or ineffective treatment of pathology. The rapid withdrawal of drugs or the absence of therapy at all leads to the chronicization of infectious inflammation in the nasopharynx. Microbes are in an inactive state, however, under certain conditions, they provoke the appearance of symptoms of the disease;
  2. the cause of prolonged rhinitis can be an allergic reaction that develops under the influence of an allergen on the human body. In this case, it will be possible to completely cure a lingering rhinitis in an adult only after the termination of contact with the provoking factor. With seasonal hay fever, a person is recommended to start taking preventive drugs 2 weeks before the appearance of allergens (plant pollen);
  3. the causes of vasomotor rhinitis should be sought in the body itself, examining the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Changes in weather conditions, stress, physical activity or strong odors can provoke the onset of symptoms of a vasomotor rhinitis;
  4. occupational hazards associated with air pollution by chemical substances. In this case, the question is raised about changing the type of activity or optimizing protective equipment in production;
  5. rhinitis caused by prolonged use of nasal drops with a vasoconstrictor effect. Usually, this group of drugs is prescribed for up to 5 days, but not all people follow medical recommendations. With the use of vasoconstrictors, the blood vessels gradually spasm, causing dryness of the nasal mucosa;
  6. a runny nose can be delayed in the presence of structural defects in the nasopharynx area, for example, with a curved septum or after traumatic damage to the osteochondral formations.

Rhinitis is delayed if the treatment of the disease was not started on time or it was carried out incorrectly.

In addition, weakened immunity and severe concomitant pathology contributes to the chronicization of inflammation.

To correctly diagnose and establish the cause of the disease, a comprehensive examination of the patient is necessary:

  1. blood test (PCR, ELISA, immunological research);
  2. allergy tests;
  3. microscopic analysis of nasopharyngeal smears;
  4. bacterial culture of discharge from the nasal cavities;
  5. X-ray examination of the paranasal sinuses;
  6. rhinoscopy.

In addition, working conditions are analyzed and the severity of comorbidities is assessed.

In the absence of the effect of drugs for allergic rhinitis, desensitization of the body can be carried out.

Home treatment

You can treat a long runny nose at home, but only after consulting a doctor. The main directions of therapy:

  • elimination of the cause of rhinitis (cessation of contact with the allergen, fight against infection);
  • rinsing the nose;
  • prescribing medications;
  • the use of folk remedies;
  • carrying out warming procedures;
  • the appointment of inhalations;
  • performing massage;
  • adherence to the nutritional regimen.

Colds begin with sneezing, nasal discharge, and general malaise. As soon as signs of the disease have been noticed, treatment should be started. The nasal lavage procedure can be used for therapeutic or prophylactic purposes. Her task:

  1. clean the surface of the mucous membrane from dust, microbes;
  2. normalize secretion;
  3. improve drainage function;
  4. moisturize the mucous membrane;
  5. reduce puffiness;
  6. restore nasal breathing;
  7. increase immune defenses;
  8. prevent the accumulation of mucus.

For treatment, the following solutions can be used:

  1. ready-made preparations, for example, Humer, Marimer, Dolphin;
  2. saline;
  3. still alkaline water;
  4. a solution of salt (4 g), two drops of iodine and warm water with a volume of 300 ml;
  5. decoctions of herbs (bark of oak, sage, calendula, St. John's wort). For cooking, you need to pour 15 g of grass with boiling water in a volume of 260 ml and leave for a quarter of an hour. To enhance the healing properties of the solution, you can add 30 ml of aloe juice;
  6. peeled, chopped cloves of garlic (4 pieces) should be poured with 650 ml of boiling water, left for half an hour, covered with a lid. Before rinsing, add aloe juice. The ratio of infusion and juice of aloe (3: 1);
  7. fresh beetroot juice should be diluted 1:10 with water, add a couple of grams of salt.

Drug therapy

It is not recommended to treat a prolonged runny nose exclusively with folk methods. Only a comprehensive therapeutic approach can quickly get rid of the symptoms of the disease. If a runny nose does not go away for a long time, you need to contact an ENT doctor to determine the cause of the disease and treatment tactics.

What can be prescribed to treat rhinitis?

Medicines in the form of a nasal spray or drops must be applied to the cleansed nasal mucosa.

Group and name of the drugDrug actionApplication features
Vasoconstrictors (Otrivin, Xymelin, Nazivin)The blood vessels at the injection site of the drug spasm, thereby reducing mucosal edema and hypersecretion. Thus, nasal breathing is restored and nasal congestion is reduced.The duration of the effect depends on the composition of the drug, it can be from 4 to 12 hours. Treatment course - 5 days
Antihistamine nasal spray (Allergodil, Fenistil)Reduces mucosal swelling, rhinorrhea, itching and sneezingIt is prescribed for the allergic origin of the common cold
Nasal spray with hormonal components (Beconase, Nasonex)Has a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic effectIt is prescribed for severe allergic, vasomotor rhinitis
Antihistamines in tablet form (Cetrin, Zodak)Blocks the development of an allergic reaction, reduces tissue swellingIt is prescribed for allergic genesis of rhinitis

Cold treatments

A long runny nose must be treated not only with drugs, but useful procedures. Thermal treatments can be used for local or general warming. For a passing cold, warming up the nose with boiled potatoes, an egg wrapped in a scarf, a bag of salt or buckwheat is useful.

During the procedure, there should be no burning sensation, therefore, if necessary, you need to wrap the heat source with additional cloth. It should be applied to the bridge of the nose and paranasal sinuses.The duration of warming up is a quarter of an hour. After the procedure, a slight hyperemia of the skin may remain, so the skin should be lubricated with baby cream.

General warming is carried out using foot baths with mustard, mustard plasters, rubbing of the chest, as well as the interscapular zone. You can enhance the effect by taking hot tea with linden, lemon, raspberry, currant or honey, after which you need to wrap yourself in a blanket.

If the runny nose lasts 2 weeks, inhalation can be performed. For this it is recommended to use:

  • boiled potatoes, herbal decoctions, essential oils - for hot inhalation;
  • chopped onions, garlic, essential oils - for a cold procedure.

If the recovery is delayed, you can help the body get rid of the pathology with the help of massage. Its action is:

  1. activation of microcirculation;
  2. improving the delivery of biologically active nutrients;
  3. decrease in the severity of edema;
  4. acceleration of regeneration;
  5. restoration of the tone of blood vessels.

Within 10 minutes, you need to massage certain points on the face. In this case, the fingers should be warm, and the movements should not cause pain. The points are located:

  • in the eyebrow zone above the bridge of the nose;
  • near the outer corners of the eyes at a distance of 1 centimeter;
  • near the wings of the nose, stepping back 1 centimeter towards the ears;
  • above the upper lip in the projection of the outer edges of the wings of the nose.
