Nose symptoms

Why is the tip of the nose numb

It is not often that we notice a sensory impairment at the tip of the nose. To find the affected area, it is enough to touch it or move this part. Numbness of the nose is manifested by the lack of sensation when probing it. The causes of numbness in the nose can be physiological or indicate the development of the disease.

Among the common reasons, it is worth highlighting the violation of vascular blood flow, drops in blood pressure, as well as psychoemotional instability.

If the tip of the nose becomes very numb and at the same time sensitivity is lost in other parts of the face, body, you should call an ambulance. The cause of the worsening of the condition may be a stroke.

Physiological causes

A temporary change in sensation on the skin of the nose may occur after exposure to low temperatures. Each of us noticed redness, sometimes even paleness of the nasal tip after returning from a severe frost. Circulatory disturbances in this case could also be seen in the fingers, earlobes or lips.

As the tissue warms up, blood flow is restored and the condition returns to normal. What should not be done in case of frostbite?

  • intensively rub the frostbite area, since thrombosis of small vessels and a violation of the integrity of the skin is possible;
  • smoking;
  • take alcohol, because after vasodilatation the body's heat transfer increases;
  • pour hot water over the frostbitten area or warm it over a fire. At the same time, the risk of burns increases, since the person does not feel the high temperature of the affected part of the body.

To warm your face, it is enough to attach a towel, which is preheated by an iron. It is also recommended to drink warm tea and exercise to activate blood circulation. Prevention of loss of nasal sensitivity includes:

  1. applying a fat cream to the skin before going out into the cold;
  2. shelter from the frosty wind, as the risk of frostbite in the wind increases significantly;
  3. warming the face with a warm scarf. If you have a long walk outside with a strong wind, you can wrap your face in a scarf, leaving only your eyes uncovered.

If purple-cyanotic areas with blisters appear on the skin, it is necessary to see a doctor for treatment of the third stage of frostbite.

Possible diseases

Nasal numbness can be a symptom of serious medical conditions. Consider the most common pathologies that are manifested by paresthesias (sensitive dysfunction).

Vascular diseases

Violation of local blood circulation can be observed with a decrease in the diameter of the vessel by atherosclerotic plaques, as well as due to compression of the vessel from the outside, for example, by a tumor. Also a serious threat is aneurysm (local expansion of the vessel with a thinning of its wall).

Depending on the localization of the area with impaired blood flow, a person may be bothered by:

  1. headache;
  2. dizziness;
  3. numbness of body parts, face;
  4. movement disorder;
  5. changes in speech, auditory, visual function;
  6. swallowing disorder.

The therapeutic tactics are determined exclusively by the doctor based on the clinical picture and the data of instrumental examination (computed, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound).

Medication can include vascular, neurometabolic, decongestants. Do not forget about physiotherapy procedures that enhance the effect of drugs and restore lost functions.

Surgical intervention can be performed according to indications.

Osteochondrosis

The development of osteochondrosis is based on dystrophic processes in the intervertebral discs, as a result of which their shape changes and the ability to perform physiological functions is lost. There are several forms of the disease. Paresthesias in the nasal tip are observed with damage to the cervical vertebral zone. Among the causes of the disease, it is worth highlighting:

  • traumatic injury;
  • genetic predisposition;
  • heavy weight;
  • metabolic disease;
  • chronic infectious diseases;
  • age processes;
  • hard physical labor with stress on the spinal column.

Intervertebral disc degeneration predisposes:

  1. improper nutrition;
  2. "sedentary work;
  3. violation of posture;
  4. frequent stress.

Symptomatically, the disease manifests itself:

  1. soreness in the back of the head, cervical area. The pain syndrome is characterized by an aching character;
  2. muscle weakness, which makes it difficult for a person to turn his head;
  3. neck crunch;
  4. headache;
  5. dizziness;
  6. paresthesia in various parts of the body, face, from which a person can notice that the tip of the nose is numb. The symptom appears as a result of nerve compression.

It is often possible to notice a decrease in visual acuity, disruption of the heart and respiratory organs.

With cervical osteochondrosis, a violation of blood flow in the vessels of the brain is often diagnosed.

Untreated osteochondrosis can be complicated by impaired blood flow in the cerebral vessels, due to which:

  • migraine occurs;
  • blood pressure rises;
  • vascular dystonia develops.

When the spinal cord is compressed, the risk of death increases. In this case, surgical intervention is required.

Therapeutic tactics for the disease include:

  1. bed rest;
  2. medical assistance;
  3. physiotherapy procedures;
  4. diet food;
  5. gymnastics;
  6. folk recipes.

Drug therapy involves the appointment of drugs to improve microcirculation, reduce pain, provide nutrition to nerve endings, and slow down the progression of degenerative processes. From the table below you can see the effect of the drugs.

Drug groupNameIndication
Anti-inflammatoryIbuprofen, MovalisReducing the severity of inflammation, pain syndrome
AntispasmodicsNo-shpa, SirdaludEliminate spasm, reduce pain
AntioxidantVitamins of group B (Milgamma), C, MexidolProtects nerve fibers
Vascular, antiplatelet agentsActovegin, TrentalImproves microcirculation
ChondroprotectorsTeraflex, ChondroxideNormalize metabolic processes, accelerate tissue regeneration

For local use, ointments, gels are prescribed. They improve local blood flow, reduce soreness and relax muscles. The preparations are composed of herbal or synthetic components. So, you can use Apizartron, Finalgon, Fastum.

Physiotherapy exercises with regular exercise leads to good results. Classes allow you to improve blood flow, strengthen your back muscles, and increase their elasticity. Among physiotherapeutic procedures, electrophoresis, mud therapy, massage, darsonvalization, as well as reflex and manual therapy are recommended.

Trigeminal neuralgia

Why is the nose numb? Often, a nasal sensory disorder is observed with damage to the trigeminal nerve. Predisposing factors include:

  1. compression of the nerve (osteochondrosis, swelling, trauma, adhesions, congenital anomalies);
  2. infections;
  3. diseases of the nervous system (multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, meningitis, epilepsy);
  4. improper dental treatment, flux, maxillofacial surgery;
  5. hypothermia;
  6. metabolic disease.

Clinically, the disease manifests itself:

  • pain in the facial area;
  • paresthesias;
  • change in facial expressions;
  • distortion of the face;
  • muscle twitching;
  • lacrimation.

Treatment for the disease includes:

  1. elimination of the cause of nerve damage;
  2. decrease in nervous excitability;
  3. medication restoration of the structure of the nerve;
  4. physiotherapy procedures.

Of the drugs, the following are prescribed:

  1. anticonvulsants (carbamazepine);
  2. muscle relaxants (Midocalm);
  3. B vitamins (neuroubin);
  4. unsaturated fatty acids (omega-3);
  5. antihistamines (Suprastin, Diazolin);
  6. sedatives (Glycine).

Physiotherapy procedures are necessary to relieve pain, restore the nerve. Therapy is carried out by courses of UFO, electrophoresis, UHF, laser, diadynamic currents, massage and acupuncture.

As we can see, a violation of the sensitivity of some parts of the face can be a rather serious symptom of the disease. To prevent complications, it is necessary to consult a neurologist for diagnostics. If numbness was noted once after hypothermia, you should not be afraid.
