Throat treatment

Gargling in adults with pharyngitis

In the modern world, one of the pressing problems is the lack of time. You have to hurry to complete all the pressing tasks - therefore, it is preferable to treat many diseases at home.

Pharyngitis is referred to as an inflammatory process within the anatomical boundaries of the pharynx. This disease has many types, but it is most often caused by viruses or bacteria.

In adults, pharyngitis usually does not become a reason for hospitalization in a hospital and can be successfully treated at home.

Knowing how to gargle with pharyngitis, you can significantly alleviate the patient's condition without complex painful manipulations.

Choosing a rinse

The anatomical position of the pharynx allows an effective result in the local treatment of the mucous membrane. Rinsing is the most popular topical treatment for pharyngitis, along with tablet resorption and spray irrigation. There are many ways to prepare a gargle - it is important to choose the most useful and safest medicine.

Adults are most often aware of the types of food and drugs they are allergic to. It is impossible to predict the likelihood of all reactions, but sensitivity to such common foods as honey, chamomile or beets usually becomes known very early - and can persist in the patient throughout his life. Therefore, first you need to determine whether the home medicine will cause allergies - if so, no healing properties can be a reason for its use.

Also, the choice of a rinse for pharyngitis depends on the etiological, that is, the causal factor:

  1. viral;
  2. bacterial;
  3. fungal.

Infectious pharyngitis cannot be cured solely by rinsing.

Usually, the rinsing method is used in the treatment of acute forms of pharyngitis in adults. If we are talking about a chronic form (for example, atrophic pharyngitis), the treatment regimen cannot be determined at home - it must be selected by a doctor after a comprehensive examination. This is true for any type of disease, but an acute course often occurs as a manifestation of ARVI and is not accompanied by dangerous complications.

Depending on the objective condition, systemic drugs may be required - for example, antibiotics.

However, in some cases (mild ARVI), it is permissible to use only local therapy. Gargling should be combined with plenty of drinking and eating food that does not irritate the mucous membrane.

In addition, special conditions are noted. If the patient is a pregnant woman, all components that can harm her body and the body of the child are excluded from the composition of the home medicine.

Simple but effective

At home, you can treat different types of pharyngitis. The simplest and most affordable recipes are:

  • A solution using soda.
  • A medicine based on kitchen salt.
  • Sea salt rinse.

The listed compositions should be preferred to local antibiotics for viral pharyngitis. To enhance the effectiveness, you can supplement the recipe with iodine solution. It is best not to do this if the patient is a pregnant woman. When bacterial or fungal pharyngitis is diagnosed, they are also used - in combination with other medicines recommended by the doctor.

It is worth remembering that iodine preparations are incompatible with Chlorhexidine.

Since iodine-containing products cannot be used concurrently with chlorhexidine-based antiseptics, it is necessary to determine before starting treatment which drug is best suited. This rule is relevant not only for initially incompatible drugs. The use of drugs belonging to different groups does not guarantee a more successful result - on the contrary, the risk of side effects increases. The exception is the dosage forms of combined action, which can potentiate the pharmacological effect of each other and are recommended by the attending physician.

Cooking algorithm

Soda and saline solutions are prepared very quickly, are useful for moisturizing and cleansing the mucous membrane. The higher the concentration of the substance in the solution, the more likely the realization of the irritating effect. Therefore, you should not increase the dosage, counting on a faster recovery. The standard recipe looks like this:

  • water - only clean, boiled, warm - 200 ml;
  • the main substance is a teaspoon;
  • iodine - 2 to 4 drops.

Depending on the availability of ingredients and patient tolerance, solutions can be prepared using one or more ingredients. For pregnant women, choose a salt or soda solution without additives. It is better to rinse often - up to 10 times a day. At the same time, it is important to follow the sequence of procedures and carry them out only after eating.

Inflammation and herbs

Herbal ingredients come to the rescue where pharmacological preparations cannot or do not want to be used. However, it is better to purchase prepared herbs from a pharmacy - to be sure that they have been grown, harvested, transported in accordance with the rules and are safe for health. Rinsing with pharyngitis with medicinal herbs is carried out using:

  1. Sage.
  2. Calendula.
  3. Oregano.
  4. Eucalyptus.

Sage is one of the most useful and attractive externally medicinal plants. Leaves are used to make home remedies. Vegetable raw materials are taken in the amount of 2 tablespoons. It is poured with hot water in an ordinary 250 ml mug or other heat-resistant container, kept for half an hour. You can add finely ground sea salt to the infusion, achieving complete dissolution.

Calendula for adults (except for pregnant women) can be used in the form of a pharmacy alcohol tincture. A teaspoon of the product is added to a glass of clean warm water, mixed and used for the procedure. Repeat up to 5 times a day.

To prepare the infusion, take oregano in an amount of 20 g, pour boiling water over it, cover with a lid and wait 10 minutes. The dosage is indicated for an amount of water equal to 0.2 l. Since this plant is an allergen and can provoke a deterioration in the condition when carrying a child, it is not used to treat patients prone to allergic reactions and pregnant women.

Eucalyptus treatment can be done with alcohol tincture. From 15 to 20 drops are dissolved in a glass of warm water, gargling with pharyngitis is repeated up to 5 times a day. There is also a drug based on eucalyptus called Chlorophyllipt. A 1% alcohol solution in the amount of a teaspoon is added to warm water (200 ml). Stir and use immediately. The described drugs are contraindicated in pregnancy.

All infusions are used only freshly prepared and warm.

When antiseptics are needed

Antiseptic drugs are active against various pathogenic agents - bacteria, viruses and fungi. However, they are most often used for bacterial infections, oropharyngeal mycoses. In this case, self-medication with the help of the named group of drugs is unacceptable. Mycotic, that is, fungal pharyngitis, is an unconditional indication for a visit to the doctor. The same goes for bacterial inflammation of the pharynx.

The range of antiseptics that can be used for local treatment of the pharyngeal mucosa is quite wide.

However, adults are most often prescribed:

  • Povidone iodine;
  • Chlorhexidine;
  • Furacilin;
  • Hexetidine and others.

All antiseptics can be produced under different trade names - it is necessary to show a doctor's prescription before buying or to clarify the active substance. A good drug should be as safe as possible, which is determined, in particular, by the presence of individual characteristics of the organism. For example, Stopangin contains Hexetidine, which is prohibited in the first trimester of pregnancy. All of the listed drugs are used at home, but several different types of drugs cannot be combined at the same time.

Pharyngitis is a disease in which rinsing is an important part of the therapy algorithm. But for the treatment to be effective, it is necessary to use solutions and infusions for the procedure only as directed by a doctor. Before consultation, it is advisable to use simple solutions that do not contain active antiseptics.
