What ear drops are effective for colds

Drops in the ears for colds are often prescribed by a doctor, even if pain is still absent, especially if it is a small child. And often the appointment is ignored, since many believe that if the ears do not hurt, then the medicine is not needed. But it just serves as the prevention of otitis media in cases where there is a possibility of its development. After all, everyone knows that it is easier to prevent a disease than to cure it.

Where does otitis media come from

Otitis media or inflammation of the middle (less often inner) ear is one of the most common complications after influenza or other airborne infections. The thing is that after hypothermia or with an acute respiratory viral infection, a runny nose usually occurs. Pathogens from the nasopharynx penetrate into the ear cavity and can provoke inflammation.

Also, nasal congestion often leads to pain in the ears, since there is a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the eardrum, which is absent in a healthy state. From constant tension, the eardrum becomes inflamed and otitis media gradually develops. Good ear drops for colds can help solve both of these problems.

If the first unpleasant signals like pain and itching in the ear are ignored, then the progressive disease will manifest itself with other symptoms:

  • increased body temperature;
  • purulent discharge from the nose and / or ear;
  • noise or ringing in your ears;
  • dizziness to nausea.

In this case, you will already have to use antibiotic ear drops, and as soon as possible so that the infection does not hit the inner ear.

Best drops

The doctor should select drops for the ears for colds, based on their general condition of the patient. For prophylactic purposes, vasoconstrictor drugs are prescribed (there are some that can be dripped into the ears and nose).

For pain, it is good to use drops with lidocaine or analgesics. With purulent otitis media - always with antimicrobial components.

Here are some of the most popular and effective remedies:

  1. Sofradex is a modern strong universal remedy that can be dripped into the ears and eyes. Consists of two strong antibiotics with a very broad spectrum of action, therefore it is able to quickly kill most pathogenic microorganisms and relieve inflammation. It is effective for purulent otitis media, due to the hormonal component, it quickly relieves itching and inflammation. Long-term use is not recommended.
  2. "Polydex" also contains two antibiotics at once. It has a pronounced anti-inflammatory and antipruritic agent. Promotes the healing of ulcers with wet eczema of the ear canal. The drug acts locally, so it can be used to treat pregnant women and young children. In case of perforation of the tympanic membrane, it is contraindicated.
  3. "Otofa" - the basis is rifampicin, which is able to cope even with staphylococcus and streptococcus. Does not contain anesthetic components. If necessary, it can be prescribed to pregnant women and children. Promotes rapid relief of inflammatory processes, hypoallergenic.
  4. «Otipax "is used at the initial stage or in the prevention of otitis media. Quickly relieves ear pain, as it contains lidocaine. Non-toxic, can be prescribed to pregnant women and children from infancy. But it is not able to cure severe inflammation and purulent otitis media.
  5. "Garazon" - this medicine differs from others in a very powerful effect. It is formulated on the basis of gentomycin, which, if used incorrectly, has an ototoxic effect and can lead to hearing loss. Therefore, the drug can be used, especially for children, only as directed by a doctor, by no means exceeding the dosage.
  6. "Otinum" - alcohol-based drops with choline salicylate - a substance with pronounced anti-inflammatory properties. Promotes softening and removal of sulfur plug. It warms up the ear well, increases blood circulation. It is used for otitis externa and colds. It is contraindicated for pregnant women and young children.
  7. Anauran is a rather strong remedy, a successful combination of two antibiotics with lidocaine. Quickly relieves inflammation, eliminates pain, and is effective even with purulent otitis media. Does not apply for damage to the tympanic membrane. It can treat both acute and chronic otitis media.
  8. "Fukortsin" is an antiseptic solution that is used to wash the ears in the event that purulent otitis media occurs with a cold, and pus is released into the ear canal. Prevents further spread of microbes, relieves skin irritation, dries eczema. For children, use diluted with water to avoid burns.
  9. "Boric alcohol" or an alcoholic solution of boric acid is instilled with congestion, mild pain in the ears, after hypothermia. They warm up well, activate blood circulation, create a destructive environment for most pathogenic microorganisms. With purulent otitis media, it is useless, with a ruptured eardrum, it is contraindicated. It is undesirable for children to drip - it can cause burns.
  10. "Camphor oil" (not camphor alcohol!). Well relieves pain and inflammation, has a warming and antimicrobial effect, expands capillaries, improves blood circulation. An absolutely natural hypoallergenic product. It is necessary to instill in the ears oil heated in a water bath, and then apply a cotton dry compress. An excellent remedy even for children and pregnant women.

These are ten of the most common ear drops you can and should use for colds. It is very difficult for a non-specialist to understand the peculiarities of their use, and the wrong treatment will be ineffective at best. For example, drugs such as "Sofradex" and "Otipax" work only in combination with vasoconstrictor nasal drops, which prevent the infection from re-entering the ear.

Therefore, it is so important to comply with all doctor's prescriptions and not to cancel any medications without his permission. If nasal discharge has stopped appearing, this does not mean that the infection is no longer there. It's just that the complex effect of the drug caused a temporary relief of the condition. In order to completely remove inflammation, you need at least 3-5 days, and sometimes more. And an unhealed illness almost always comes back.
