Antibiotics for purulent sore throat

Purulent sore throat is one of the few diseases in the treatment of which the use of antibiotics is not only justified, but also simply necessary. Purulent inflammation of the tonsils is rapidly developing under the influence of pathogens and if their active reproduction is not stopped in time, the consequences can be very serious.

Causes and types

According to the research results, the most common causative agents of purulent sore throat are streptococci, but they can participate in the process of staphylococci, other types of bacteria and fungi. Therefore, antibiotics for purulent angina in adults, in the absence of contraindications, are the main drug that works to destroy pathogenic microflora.

The following can accelerate the development of the disease and complicate its course:

  • reduced immunity of the patient;
  • constant irritation of the larynx (especially smoking!);
  • the presence of other chronic diseases;
  • the presence of infection in the oral cavity (stomatitis, rotten teeth, etc.);
  • hypothermia, overwork, stress;
  • alcohol abuse;
  • improper selection and administration of medications.

Purulent tonsillitis has several varieties: lacunar, follicular, etc., each of which has its own characteristics of treatment. But antibiotics are used in any case, and the doctor should select the drug depending on the pathogen, accompanying symptoms and stage of the disease.

The main symptoms

High-quality and fast treatment of purulent sore throat without a thorough diagnostic examination is impossible. Yes, the disease has its own pronounced symptoms, on the basis of which the primary diagnosis is made and even broad-spectrum antibiotics are prescribed:

  • severe redness and sore throat;
  • a sharp increase in body temperature to 39OC and higher;
  • dizziness, weakness, chills;
  • nausea, vomiting and other signs of intoxication;
  • significant enlargement of the lymph nodes;
  • swelling and severe redness of the tonsils;
  • the formation of boils or white plaque on the tonsils.

With the simultaneous presence of three or more of the above signs, antibiotic treatment begins even before the results of laboratory tests are obtained, since in its absence, complications may develop rapidly. Subsequently, the appointments are adjusted or additional drugs are connected.

Popular antibiotics

It is possible to say which antibiotic for purulent sore throat will be most effective in this particular case only after bacterial sowing of mucus from the throat. The sample is placed in a sterile nutrient medium, and after about a day, the laboratory assistant is able to determine which microorganisms provoked the disease. At the same time, you can check their sensitivity to various types of drugs and choose the best option.

Most often, for the treatment of purulent sore throat, they use:

  • penicillins: "Amoxicillin", "Amoxiclav", "Augmentin", "Flemoxin", "Amoxiclav", "Bitsillin", etc .;
  • cephalosporins: Cefazolin, Cefalixin, Ceftriaxone, Cefuroxime, etc .;
  • macrolides: "Clarithromycin", "Erythromycin", "Azithromycin", etc.

These are systemic antibiotics that come in the form of pills or injections. They affect the entire body, including negatively affecting the beneficial microflora of the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, probiotics are usually prescribed simultaneously with them to avoid the development of dysbiosis.

Topical preparations have a more gentle effect on the body. These are lozenges or a gargle and mouthwash. They also enter the bloodstream, but in much smaller quantities and practically do not have a negative effect on the intestinal microflora.

When injections are needed

With a severe form of purulent sore throat, the doctor often prescribes antibiotics in the form of intramuscular injections. This is necessary in order to achieve the fastest possible therapeutic effect. Once in the stomach, the pill must first dissolve, then be absorbed in the intestines, and only after that the medicine begins to work. Injected with the help of an injection, the drug almost immediately enters the bloodstream and begins to work.

An additional bonus is that, without getting into the gastrointestinal tract, the antibiotic does not irritate the gastric mucosa and does not have a strong negative effect on the intestinal microflora. Therefore, the drug in this form is often prescribed to people with disorders in the work of the digestive tract. Forced to receive injections, not pills, and those who simply cannot swallow them because of a severe sore throat.

But there are also some downsides. At home, it is not always convenient to give injections if there is no person nearby who can perform the procedure efficiently. If the drug is injected incorrectly, a lump or abscess may form at the injection site.

If an allergy occurs to the medicine, then after the injection it manifests itself faster and stronger than after taking the pill. Therefore, it is necessary to make a test for a new antibiotic - a subcutaneous injection in order to avoid anaphylactic shock.

General treatment regimen

But the treatment of purulent sore throat is not limited only to the use of antibiotics. An integrated approach is important here, in which there are no trifles:

  1. Bed rest. In the acute stage of the disease, strict adherence is necessary. The disease must be "kept" because the body is already weakened by infection and high fever.
  2. Drink plenty of fluids. Warm weak tea, decoctions of medicinal herbs will wash away purulent mucus from the throat, help to quickly remove accumulated toxins and decay products of drugs.
  3. Sparing diet. Food should be mashed or finely chopped so that particulate matter does not irritate or scratch your throat. It is necessary to give up too hot, cold, fatty, fried, spicy foods, carbonated drinks, alcohol.
  4. Gargling. Gargling when treating tonsillitis is necessary at least 5-6 times a day: after each meal and before using topical antibiotics. For rinsing, use a solution of furacilin, "Givalex" and other antiseptics.
  5. Local antibiotics. These are tablets for resorption and sprays for irrigation of tonsils: Bioparox, Grammicidin, Strepsils, Faringosept, etc. Local antibiotics for purulent sore throat will not allow the infection to spread further in the oral cavity.
  6. Anti-inflammatory drugs. Reduce pain, eliminate redness of the tonsils, stop inflammation. You can use sprays: "Ingalipt", "Ingakamf", "Cameton", etc. Or soluble agents "Coldrex", "Fervex", "Ibuprofen", most of which have an antipyretic effect.
  7. General strengthening therapy. It is aimed at enhancing the body's immune defense. To do this, use multivitamin complexes, extracts of medicinal plants (ginseng, eleutherococcus, echinacea, etc.), complex preparations "Immunal", "Immuneks", etc.

Important! With purulent sore throat, in no case should you try to remove plaque from the tonsils or squeeze out boils on your own. This can only be done by a doctor with strict adherence to the conditions of sterility. At home, you can transfer the infection to nearby tissues and help spread it.

Prevention of sore throat

Some people do not know that angina is a very contagious disease and you can catch it by using dishes or a towel from a sick family member.Therefore, if someone is sick with a sore throat in the house, it is advisable to isolate him and provide him with individual items of personal use.

Simple preventive measures will help to avoid the disease:

  • strengthening immunity with the help of hardening procedures and physical exercises;
  • rejection of bad habits that lead to atrophy of the mucous membranes: smoking, etc.;
  • natural high-quality nutrition, rich in vitamins, minerals and trace elements;
  • maintaining cleanliness, moderate temperature and humidity in residential and work premises;
  • avoiding hypothermia, wearing hats in cold and windy weather.

If you have already had sore throats repeatedly, it is also advisable not to allow sudden changes in temperature, changes in climatic conditions, too hot and cold foods and drinks.

During periods of massive respiratory diseases, it is necessary to avoid crowded places, try not to contact or be in the same room with those infected.

The development of purulent sore throat can be prevented if the first symptoms are noticed in time and immediately begin to be treated. In a home medicine cabinet, it is always advisable to have such lozenges as "Septefril", "Faringosept", etc. They can be taken without a doctor's prescription at the first sore throat, accompanied by a sharp deterioration in health.

At the same time, you need to connect an abundant drink (chamomile, linden, calendula) and rinse with a soda solution. But if the disease continues to progress, qualified medical care is needed.
