Throat treatment

How to cleanse pus on tonsils at home

Inflammatory processes occurring in the tonsils are a common pathology, both among adults and children. A mandatory sign of follicular or lacunar sore throat caused by bacteria are purulent deposits and plugs on the tonsils.

Home treatment for these conditions is due to the fact that in most cases the disease has a mild course.

Correct prescription of antibiotics leads to recovery in 4-7 days (depending on the form of angina).

Only children under one year need hospitalization, since at this age the disease is characterized by a more severe course and is prone to the development of complications.

Characteristics of purulent diseases

The general clinical signs for each form of the disease are similar. The difference lies precisely in the morphological changes, determined by an objective examination. Moreover, all inflammatory processes in the tonsils differ in the nature and depth of the lesion, the involvement of various structures in the process. In this regard, they are divided into catarrhal, purulent and necrotic. The latter form is extremely rare, only in debilitated patients.

A pharyngoscopic picture, corresponding to the catarrhal form of angina, is characterized only by an increase and redness of the tonsils. Plaques or plugs, indicating a purulent lesion, are absent. Follicular and lacunar tonsillitis are accompanied not only by redness and enlargement of the tonsils, but also by the formation of purulent deposits on them. These forms of sore throat are conditions characterized by the appearance of purulent foci. With follicular angina, they are localized in the follicles. Lacunar angina is characterized by damage to the crypts of the tonsils.

With purulent tonsillitis, the general condition of the patient deteriorates noticeably, the phenomena of intoxication and hyperthermia increase, pain in the throat increases. Lymphadenopathy is noted not only on palpation, but also at rest. These factors force us to look for ways out of this situation.

At this stage, it is important to consult an otolaryngologist who will diagnose and prescribe the correct treatment. In the event that we are talking about the presence of purulent foci on the tonsils, and the process is limited to these formations, most likely, we are talking about a bacterial pathogen. In this case, you cannot do without antibiotics. At the same time, the lack of correct treatment can lead to the transition of acute tonsillitis into a chronic form.

The need to cleanse the tonsils

Antibiotic therapy leads to the fact that after 1-2 days from the start of taking these funds, there is an improvement in the general condition, a decrease in temperature indicators, and cleansing of the tonsils from abscesses.

No additional effort is required to remove pus from the tonsils.

Thus, it is not required to remove abscesses on your own due to the fact that

  1. Painful sensations are caused not by their presence, but by the inflammatory process occurring in the tonsils. This is confirmed by catarrhal tonsillitis, which proceeds without the formation of abscesses, but with severe pain syndrome and symptoms of intoxication;
  2. Removal of abscesses without antibiotic therapy will not lead to an improvement in the situation and will not prevent the development of complications of the disease. At the same time, the appointment of appropriate treatment against the pathogen will promote a speedy recovery.

Unprofessional actions to remove pus from the tonsils are very dangerous. They are accompanied by additional trauma, severe pain sensations, in addition, they lead to the formation of an extensive wound surface, the formation of scars and the transition of the disease into a chronic form.

The only indication in which the removal of a purulent focus in the tonsils can be recommended is the development of a purulent complication of tonsillitis, abscess or phlegmon.

In this case, the use of antibiotics may not be enough. The only effective method for treating this pathology is surgical intervention. However, such a therapeutic measure can only be carried out by a specialist in the conditions of the corresponding department.

Methods for cleansing tonsils

ENT doctors are constantly faced with the fact that patients or their relatives seek to remove pus from the tonsils at home. Usually such actions are performed with the help of gauze wound on a finger, carrying out mechanical scraping off the plaque. In some cases, hydrogen peroxide, Lugol's solution or furacilin is used for this.

All these actions do not so much remove existing plaque as injure the surrounding tissue. In addition, these funds have an irritating effect on the mucous membrane, contributing to increased pain. Whether such a procedure will clear the tonsils from plaque is unknown, but it will certainly have a damaging effect on nearby tissues.

The procedures that are also not recommended for carrying out include an attempt to cleanse the tonsils with honey dissolved in water. Although the irritating effect of honey is absent, bacterial pathogens, staphylococci and streptococci, do very well in sweet solutions of glucose and fructose. In addition to traumatizing the surrounding tissues, such manipulation will further spread the infection. We should not forget about beekeeping products as a powerful allergen.

Dangerous procedures

Attempts to mechanically squeeze pus out of the tonsils are no less dangerous. This procedure is carried out using a spatula. At home, patients seeking to recover as soon as possible and not familiar with the course of the disease use a spoon for this. By pressing on the amygdala, pus flows out of the focus. These attempts do not always lead to the outflow of pus, but are always accompanied by trauma to nearby tissues.

An extremely dangerous action is an attempt to remove pus by puncturing an abscess.

For this, patients use an ordinary needle, at best, treated with an antiseptic solution. Carrying out such a puncture, they press on nearby tissues, which contributes to the outflow of pus.

This is a very painful and dangerous procedure, as a result of which you can injure the oral mucosa or tongue. Even if it is carried out successfully, there is a significant risk of spreading the infection, and formation of wounds or ulcers at the puncture site. It is these actions that can cause the development of tonsil abscess and the need for surgical intervention.

Surgical intervention

Such a surgical intervention can be carried out only in a surgical department with the available indications for this. The need for such actions is due to the development of an abscess, when the gland sharply increases in size due to purulent contents. This process is often one-sided. At the same time, such an increase in the amygdala is noted that there is some displacement of the tongue to the side.

A specialist opens the focus in two ways: blunt and sharp, depending on the instrument used. In the first case, a surgical instrument resembling scissors, a forceps, is inserted by the doctor into the abscess cavity and there the branches are pushed apart. A hole is formed through which pus flows out. During the operation, it is important to tilt the patient's head so that pus does not enter the trachea and bronchi.

It is possible to carry out the operation with a scalpel, which makes an incision. This intervention also allows pus to drain outward, emptying the tonsil. After the evacuation of pus from the oral cavity, a thorough treatment of all mucous membranes of the throat cavity is carried out with antiseptic preparations.

Such procedures are carried out under local anesthesia. This helps to reduce the pain syndrome, allows better fixation of the pathogenic focus and allows the patient to open his mouth wider, and, therefore, to facilitate the work of the surgeon, improve visual observation of the progress of the operation.

The basic rule in carrying out any surgical manipulation is adherence to asepsis. Adequate operating room, sterile surgical and dressing instruments - these factors contribute to the effectiveness and safety of the procedure. At home, the fulfillment of these important conditions is out of the question. Even carrying out a puncture in the appropriate place will not improve the situation, but may lead to repeated abscess formation or the development of phlegmon.

With the help of surgical manipulation, it is possible not only to clean the tonsils, but also to take the necessary material for research. The extracted pus by puncture of the tonsil is sent for a bacterioscopic examination, and it is also cultured to determine the sensitivity to antibiotics. This is important in the chronic, protracted course of the process.

Washing the tonsils

Another way to remove pus from the tonsils is to rinse. Using this simple, painless technique, you can wash the most accessible lesions. In addition, according to many patients, this procedure is accompanied by a decrease in pain in the throat. The solutions used for these purposes are

  • soda solution (1 teaspoon of soda per liter of boiled water);
  • saline solution (1 teaspoon of table or sea salt in 0.5 liters of water);
  • furacilin solution;
  • decoctions of herbs with antiseptic properties (chamomile, sage, calendula).

The temperature of the solutions used is 40 degrees. It is recommended to carry out the procedure 5-6 times a day for 2-3 minutes, using 1 glass of solution.

Summing up, we come to the conclusion that it is not necessary to mechanically remove ulcers from the tonsils, since this procedure is dangerous, painful and useless.

It is much more effective to use various solutions for this gargling. Conducting appropriate antibacterial treatment helps to improve the condition in a short time, without the use of such traumatic procedures.
