Sinusitis

The most effective folk remedies for the treatment of sinusitis in adults

Maxillary sinusitis is a disease in which the mucous membranes of the paranasal chambers become inflamed under the influence of various pathogens. With a severe purulent form of the disease, antibiotics and other potent medications are necessarily used, however, with a catarrhal form and at the initial stage of development, treatment of sinusitis with folk remedies is very popular. For such therapy, the healing properties of substances of plant and animal origin are mainly used. Next, we will consider which methods of treating sinusitis with folk remedies are the most effective.

Conditions and features of sinusitis treatment at home

Before information on how to cure sinusitis with folk remedies, it should be noted that alternative treatment of sinusitis in adults and children is possible only after consulting an otolaryngologist and in the presence of special conditions:

  • catarrhal form of the disease at an early stage, when the bacterial microflora has not yet joined;
  • disease at the stage of recovery and restoration of the normal action of all body functions;
  • chronic sinusitis during remission and prevention of its exacerbations;
  • auxiliary therapy for the main drug or surgical form of treatment of acute sinusitis.

All used folk remedies for sinusitis should be coordinated by the attending physician, taking into account the peculiarities of the course of the disease and the patient's contraindications to certain substances. Traditional methods of treating sinusitis have their own characteristics that must be taken into account by the patient:

  • Home therapy using folk methods, as opposed to medication, lasts from several weeks to several months. You should not expect immediate results, so you need to be patient.
  • Start taking decoctions and infusions of medicinal herbs from one name, and do the fees only after the absence of individual allergic reactions to them is confirmed.
  • All substances of animal or plant origin with sinusitis should be taken first in minimal dosages, and only then go to the quantities that are recommended by folk recipes.
  • It is necessary to use natural raw materials for the procedures, collected in ecologically clean regions and harvested according to the correct technology, while maintaining all the healing qualities. Prepare decoctions and infusions in accordance with the instructions.
  • The absence of a positive result from the treatment of sinusitis at home or the deterioration of the patient's condition is a reason to contact the ENT for advice.

Inhalation for maxillary sinusitis

Traditional methods of treating sinusitis, with less efficacy than drug therapy, are distinguished for the better by a more gentle effect on the body and a low price of the constituent components. The most popular recipe for sinusitis is inhalation. As a rule, at home they breathe over steam, although some also use special nebulizers.

Proven recipes for the treatment of steam inhalation, which do not require a lot of time and money:

  • The traditional method, known from childhood, we most often treat children with it. Several potatoes in their uniforms are boiled until tender, after which the water is drained, and the potatoes are slightly kneaded for better steam release. The patient sits down, bending over the pan, covers his head with a warm towel or blanket and breathes in steam for about 10 minutes. The procedure is carried out twice a day.
  • Herbal decoctions. Crushed dry herb is brewed in a water bath or simply poured with boiling water for half an hour. Before inhalation, the broth is brought to a boil, a more effective treatment will be if you add a couple of drops of eucalyptus or pine essential oil to the liquid. Breathe with your head wrapped for 15 minutes. In this case, you should take precautions, do not bend low over the water, so that the hot steam does not burn the nasal mucosa.
  • Essential oils. With sinusitis, oils of conifers and various spices help well. In one liter of boiling water, add 4 drops of tea tree and eucalyptus oils, 2 drops of black cumin and ginger oils.
  • Alcohol tincture of propolis (pharmacy or homemade) is added in the amount of 2 teaspoons per 2 liters of boiling water. Repeat inhalation twice a day for 3 days. Do not use for people with intolerance to bee products.
  • A few cloves of garlic are thrown into boiling water and cooked for 1 minute until a characteristic smell appears. You need to inhale through the mouth and exhale through the nose. Treatment of sinusitis with garlic is prescribed to relieve congestion and restore full breathing.

Inhalation can cure the disease at an early stage or help improve the functioning of the epithelium after the end of the acute purulent form of the disease.

In acute sinusitis, strong heating of the sinuses and facial skin can cause a sharp deterioration in the patient's condition and the activation of the multiplication of pathogenic bacteria with the accumulation of pus.

In order for the procedure to give the desired result, it is necessary to restore the patency of the nose: drip a vasoconstrictor drug a few minutes before the start, and then blow your nose. You need to breathe through your nose deeply and calmly, without bending too low so as not to get burned. After completing breathing with steam, it is recommended to lie down, covered with a blanket and drink warm tea with St. John's wort, raspberries or strawberries, which will help improve the outflow of the liquefied secretion.

Rinsing the nose is the mainstay of therapy

If the patient has a desire to cure sinusitis with folk remedies, then it is impossible to do without rinsing the nose. If the infected mucus is not removed in time, then recovery will come later, or the disease will completely turn into a sluggish form. In the hospital, the accessory chambers are cleaned only in difficult situations, using YAMIK catheting and the Proetz method ("cuckoo"). Most often, with sinusitis, rinsing is done at home.

For simple flow-through rinsing of the nasal passages and sinuses, it is enough to have a small syringe or a syringe without a needle for 20 cubes at home. Advanced users or yoga aficionados usually have a jala neti teapot specially designed for irrigation to hand. To rinse the nose with a small amount of mucus, simply draw in the liquid from the palm of your hand.

When irrigating with folk methods, the patient sits, bending over a sink or bowl. The head is tilted to the side, the solution is gently poured into one nasal passage and out of the other, evacuating accumulations and clearing the sinus fistulas. Then the manipulation is repeated with the head tilted to the other side. Pre-nasal passages need to be prepared using decongestants and blowing your nose. The creation of strong water pressure can lead to painful sensations, as well as to its flowing into the Eustachian tubes with the possible development of otitis media. This is especially true for children with their peculiarities of anatomical development.

To get rid of sinusitis, traditional medicine suggests using such remedies for nasal irrigation:

  • Saline (physiological) solution 0.9%. This is the most well-known and physiological fluid, which is similar in composition to the fluids of the human body. The saline solution can be purchased at the pharmacy or prepared by yourself. Half a teaspoon of table, sea or iodized salt is poured into a glass of warm boiled water and stirred until completely dissolved. It is advisable not to use "Extra" fine-fraction salt, since it is difficult to calculate the required amount, and the solution can burn the mucous membrane. After cooking, it is better to strain the liquid through a strainer or cheesecloth to remove impurities.
  • Decoctions of biologically active plants. To cure sinusitis at home using the forces of nature is a good idea, but you need to do everything right so as not to harm. When deciding to make a decoction of, say, sage, you need to be sure that the patient is not allergic to it. Otherwise, the swelling may worsen. Therefore, when preparing a collection of herbs yourself or buying it at a pharmacy, you need to make sure that all its ingredients are suitable for a particular patient. To prepare the correct broth, a tablespoon of chopped dry herb per 200 ml of boiling water is enough.
  • Vegetable and berry juices. Freshly squeezed juice of cranberries, carrots, black currants, beets, onions is added to physiological solution at the rate of 1 part juice to 3 parts water. A few minutes after rinsing with juice, rinse your nose with boiled water.
  • Propolis. Irrigation fluid consists of a glass of water and 15 drops of 10% alcoholic tincture of propolis. The natural activity of black wax has antimicrobial, analgesic and vaso-strengthening effect. It also helps to remove toxins from tissues and improve local blood circulation.
  • Pharmacy tinctures and powders from natural ingredients. Prepare in accordance with the supplied instructions. Often used are Rotokan (alcohol-water solution of yarrow, calendula and chamomile), Elekasol (powder from licorice, chamomile, string, eucalyptus, calendula and sage) and Malavit (alcoholic tincture from plants, resins and balsams of Altai Mountains).

Often, folk remedies for the treatment of sinusitis in order to enhance the antimicrobial action are supplemented with simple components that are in every family medicine cabinet. A couple of drops of iodine, several crystals of potassium permanganate (potassium permanganate) until pale pink or 2.5 g of baking soda are added to the saline solution. Good results are observed when rinsing the nasal cavity with furacilin, which reduces purulent and inflammatory processes. The drug is sold in the form of tablets or a ready-made solution.

In recent years, ready-made pharmaceutical saline solutions (Aqua Maris, Dolphin) have been in high demand, complete with specially designed devices for rinsing. For young children, a less saline (hypotonic) solution (Salin) is better suited, and for patients with a large amount of mucus, a hypertonic solution (Aqualor Forte, Humer).

Preparation and use of ointments

When deciding how to treat sinusitis at home, do not forget about such a remedy for sinusitis as homemade ointments. With their help, they remove inflammatory processes, locally anesthetize the nasal cavity, and promote the accelerated regeneration of the epithelial integument. Ointments can be placed in the nasal passages with turundas or tampons, as well as applied directly to the mucous membrane.

For the preparation of ointments, both herbal ingredients and medications are used, the main thing is to achieve positive dynamics, which is expressed in the subsiding of the symptoms of the disease. Several recipes from ingredients well known to people who know how to treat sinusitis:

  • Laundry soap (brown, 72%) contains fatty acids, animal fat, vitamins E and D, alkali, rosin. These components help well in the treatment of sinusitis. It is necessary to grate soap with large cells, one tablespoon is enough. After that, the soap is melted in a water bath, an equal amount of honey, onion juice and propolis tincture is added to it, everything is thoroughly mixed until a completely homogeneous mass is obtained and cooled. They also use such a folk remedy: melted soap is mixed with beaten egg white just before use. You can not use bath and toilet soap containing fragrances and dyes, as well as tar soap for the treatment of sinusitis.
  • Bee honey ointments. Proven folk recipes for sinusitis: reduce 1 tablespoon of refined vegetable oil and 4-5 tablespoons of honey melted in a water bath. Then pour 5 g of garlic or onion juice into the mixture. An ointment made from honey and freshly squeezed beetroot juice also helps.
  • Baking soda promotes the active discharge of exudate. It is enough to mix an incomplete teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate with the same amount of unrefined sunflower oil and honey. An option using baking soda and sea buckthorn oil is also possible. In both cases, after 20-30 minutes of exposure to the ointment, the patient begins to sneeze and an abundant outflow of mucus from the nose. With severe burning or pinching, the procedure time is reduced.
  • Combined funds. They are based on a pharmacy ointment and supplemented with natural ingredients. For example, 50 g of dioxidine ointment is mixed with 20 g of juice from aloe leaves and 3 drops of essential menthol oil. Another option: combine 4 parts of Vishnevsky's ointment in a water bath with propolis or honey, aloe and onion juice (1 part each).

The course of such treatment lasts from 7 to 14 days. It is more effective to lay ointments in the nostrils on turundas, after rinsing the nasal passages. This allows the agent to come into contact with the affected tissues for a longer time and over a larger area, and also not to flow out of the nose along with snot. During the procedure, the patient should lie on his side or on his back.

Homemade nasal drops

If we approach the treatment of sinusitis with folk remedies at home in a comprehensive manner, then the role of drops is simply invaluable. They can be used after inhalation and rinsing, in combination with ointments and compresses. Their advantage is that literally 2-3 minutes are enough for the entire manipulation. They can be injected into the nasal passages at home or at work.

Some plants have a pronounced healing effect, so homemade preparations based on them can fully replace chemical medicines:

  • Cyclamen is able to completely free the sinuses from exudate with regular use. The root of the flower is rubbed on a fine grater, and then squeezed through a cloth or gauze. The juice itself is poisonous in its pure form, so it is highly diluted with water - a glass of water for a teaspoon of juice. You need to bury the liquid 1 time a day, 2 drops. In this case, the patient lies and lightly massages the wings of the nose and cheekbones in the projection of the accessory pockets. The plant can cause an allergic reaction, so it should be used with caution, and it is generally not recommended for pregnant women and children. If you are not sure that you will prepare the solution correctly, then it is better to buy the drug "Stnuforte" based on cyclamen at the pharmacy.
  • Aloe restores the function of the ciliated epithelium, relieves puffiness. It is used in both folk and traditional therapy. There are a number of aloe-based recipes. For example, the juice of a plant is mixed with an equal volume of honey, 5 drops of celandine are added there, an anti-inflammatory and bactericidal agent is obtained, which is poured into the nasal cavity three times a day. The following recipe is often used: a tablespoon of aloe juice and 10 drops of onion juice. But you can not bother yourself and just drip pure aloe juice 3 times a day, 2 drops, the result will be noticeable in a few days.
  • Kalanchoe is an irreplaceable plant for sinusitis in acute and chronic form. The juice from its fleshy leaves, instilled 4 times a day in pure form, causes prolonged strong sneezing, which is why the mucus is forcibly evacuated. You can soften the active effect of Kalanchoe by combining it with honey, aloe juice and baking soda and pouring 2 drops into the nose three times a day. Children under 6 years of age this method is undesirable because it is difficult for them to control the sneezing process.

For more choice, we will give a few more examples of how to treat sinusitis with folk methods using drops:

  • Reduce freshly squeezed carrot and red beet juice 1: 1 and instill 3 drops alternately in both nostrils. If unpleasant sensations arise, then add a little water to the mixture. This method has no serious contraindications and is suitable for babies.
  • Sea buckthorn oil is used instead of traditional nasal preparations in pure form or mixed with onion juice (3: 1 ratio). It is introduced into the nasal passages in the morning and in the evening.
  • Hydrogen peroxide is good for removing copious mucus with purulent inclusions. A 3% peroxide solution is diluted with water 1: 2. You can check the reaction of the body by pouring 1 drop of solution into the nostrils. If everything is normal, then the dosage can be increased to 3 drops twice a day. On contact with air, peroxide breaks down into oxygen and hydrogen, producing a thick foam that cleans the entire nasal cavity. Foam with snot should be quickly blown out.

Compresses and warming up the sinuses

With sinusitis, treatment with folk remedies is mainly auxiliary in nature. So, all kinds of compresses and lotions are intended to warm up the accessory chambers to improve blood microcirculation in them and restore mucous membranes. In the acute course of the disease, they can worsen the patient's condition, but are very effective in the recovery phase. A fully cured patient is less likely to have a second disease.

  • Clay compresses. 50-60 g of clay is brought with hot water to a state of soft plasticine. Form two cakes 4-5 cm in diameter out of clay and put in a heated form on the maxillary chambers on both sides. It is better to put gauze soaked in vegetable oil between the skin and the clay. It is recommended to keep such a compress for one hour.
  • Bay leaf. 5-6 leaves are boiled in boiling water for several minutes, then the liquid is slightly cooled. A napkin soaked in broth is placed on the face and covered with a towel. After the tissue has cooled down, the procedure is repeated several more times.

It is possible to warm up the accessory pockets at the initial stage of the disease, when the purulent process has not yet developed. This sometimes helps to stop the disease in a timely manner:

  • Dry salt heated in a pan is poured into a napkin or bag and applied to the affected organ until it cools. To avoid burns, you can pre-place a cotton handkerchief on your face.
  • The hard-boiled eggs are wrapped in napkins and pressed against the cheeks in the sinus area for 10-15 minutes.

After warming up and compresses, hypothermia of the body should not be allowed.
