How to treat sore glands at home

Acute tonsillitis, an inflammatory process in the tonsils, is often caused by the effects of pathogenic microorganisms, bacteria, viruses. It is usually characterized by a mild course.

Therefore, there is no need to hospitalize such patients. The general condition allows for therapeutic measures at home. The treatment requirements are as follows:

  • drugs must be safe and effective, their form of release is easy to use;
  • procedures should be easy to use and accessible.

How to treat inflammation of the tonsils at home, what therapeutic measures to prefer, is influenced by a number of factors.

Antibiotic therapy

The most effective are therapeutic measures directed against the pathogenic microorganism, the effect of which caused this symptomatology. The main factor that must be taken into account when prescribing treatment for inflammation of the tonsils is the specification of the pathogen. Most often, the following pathogens are the cause of the development of tonsillitis:

  • streptococcus;
  • staphylococcus;
  • Pneumococcus;
  • adenovirus;
  • Coxsackie enterovirus;
  • herpes virus;
  • Epstein-Barr virus;
  • fungi of the genus Candida, etc.

The most close attention is caused by the inflammatory process in the tonsils, due to the effect of group A hemolytic streptococcus.In this case, we are talking about angina, an infectious disease transmitted by airborne droplets and by household. The special position of this disease is due to the development of possible severe complications leading to disability:

  • joint damage;
  • kidney pathology;
  • the development of rheumatic heart disease with the formation of valvular defects.

Since angina is caused by the effect of a certain pathogen, the main treatment should be the appointment of drugs that have a destructive effect on the pathogenic microorganism.

It will not be possible to cure a sore throat without the use of antibacterial agents.

In this case, the most active antibiotics from the ampicillin group, cephalosporins, macrolides:

  • Amoxicillin;
  • Augmentin;
  • Amoxiclav;
  • Zinnat;
  • Cefuroxime;
  • Erythromycin;
  • Azithromycin.

The drugs are in tablet form, which allows them to be used at home. There are certain requirements for the use of antibiotics:

  1. They are prescribed based on the recommendations of the attending physician;
  2. It is necessary to adhere to a clear dosage and frequency of administration of the drug;
  3. It should be noted that the intake of some funds may be associated with the time of the meal;
  4. The duration of antibiotic intake should be at least 5-7 days;
  5. It should be borne in mind that the use of antibiotics may be accompanied by the development of side effects;
  6. With the ineffectiveness of the drug, as well as with the development of complications of the disease, the replacement of the antibiotic should be carried out by the attending physician.

Bioparox

Recently, Bioparox, an aerosol antibiotic that is active against many bacterial pathogens of the ENT organs pathology, and also has an antifungal effect, has become increasingly popular.

Since Bioparox is not absorbed into the bloodstream, it is safe and can be used in cases where the use of other antibiotics is limited by possible side effects.

A contraindication to the use of this remedy can only be the age of the patient. In order not to cause the development of laryngospasm, spraying the agent in the oral cavity is not allowed in children under the age of three.

Topical preparations

The inflammatory process in the tonsils is characterized by the development of a pathological reaction, in which there is a sore throat, fever, signs of malaise. The process usually involves both palatine tonsils. Moreover, each gland looks enlarged, edematous, hyperemic. Therefore, an important part of treatment is activities aimed at reducing the clinical manifestations of the disease.

Of great importance in the treatment of inflammation of the tonsils is given to topical preparations. The use of drugs with anti-inflammatory, analgesic effect, helps to reduce sore throat and regression of other objective signs. Popular topical treatments include aerosols, lozenges, Faringosept, Cameton, Ingalipt, Givalex and others. However, these drugs have low anti-inflammatory activity.

For the treatment of streptococcal sore throat, topical preparations can only be used in complex treatment.

These drugs are most widely used for the treatment of pharyngitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis of a viral nature, where antibiotics are ineffective.

Application of medical procedures

At home, procedures such as washing the tonsils are very popular. They are especially effective in the treatment of chronic inflammatory processes. In this case, the activation of the process may be due to the accumulation of food debris, desquamated epithelium and dead cells in the crypts of the tonsils. By clearing the tonsils and improving the drainage function of the tonsils, it is possible to prevent an exacerbation of the inflammatory process. Such procedures are carried out in an ENT office.

Since the procedure for washing the tonsils is characterized by ease of implementation, it is possible to carry out it at home. To do this, use a syringe with a removable needle of 10 ml or a rubber bulb. Having typed the antiseptic into the syringe and moving the plunger, it is necessary to direct the stream of water to the tonsils and rinse them one by one. Carrying out such a procedure several times a day, after eating, you can achieve significant results in flushing out purulent foci, which is the prevention of the development of exacerbation of chronic tonsillitis.

In cases where washing the tonsils at home seems like a difficult procedure, it is possible to use a throat rinse. Most often, a solution of furacilin is used for this. It can be prepared independently by dissolving two tablets of the drug in a glass of boiled water, or purchased as a ready-made solution in the pharmacy network. Among the pharmaceutical preparations, the following antiseptic agents are most often used:

  • Miramistin;
  • Chlorhexidine;
  • Hexoral;
  • Rivanol et al.

Saline and soda solutions, as well as a solution of sea water, in which the third component is an alcohol solution of iodine, are also equally effective. (2-3 drops of iodine are needed per glass of the product). It is recommended to carry out such rinses several times a day. The solution used should be in the mouth for 15-20 seconds. It is required to carry out at least 5-6 approaches. Thus, one rinsing procedure can take 2-3 minutes. In this case, one glass of the prepared solution is used.

Herbal decoctions, which have anti-inflammatory effects, can also be used to gargle. Most often these are calendula, sage, chamomile, which is also part of the ready-made rinse, Rotokan. The procedure can be carried out using pharmacy products, bacteriophages. Not being an antibiotic, each of these drugs is active against a specific bacterial pathogen, staphylococcus, streptococcus, etc. There are pyobacteriophages that are active against several pathogens simultaneously.

Bacteriophage solutions do not have side effects, are safe, therefore they are used especially widely in cases where the use of antibiotics should be limited.

In children, bacteriophages can be used from birth. In acute angina, as well as symptomatic tonsillitis caused by childhood infections, infectious mononucleosis, gargling should be carried out throughout the acute period until the tonsils are completely cleared of plaque.

As for local physiotherapeutic procedures, which can be carried out at home, then their use in this case should be abandoned. Possessing a powerful therapeutic effect, procedures such as the application of irritating substances, warming compresses, under certain conditions, can worsen the course of the disease, promote the spread of the process. They are especially dangerous with a purulent form of tonsillitis.

An important part of home treatment is also providing patients with bed rest, a sparing diet. Patients suffering from inflammation of the glands and experiencing persistent sore throat should not eat rough and acidic foods, too hot or cold, containing irritating substances.

In order for the treatment of acute tonsillitis to be effective, the disease does not transform into a chronic form and does not lead to the development of severe complications, the patient should consult an otolaryngologist before starting treatment. The specialist will be able to clarify the nature of the lesion, bacterial or viral, diagnose symptomatic angina, exclude diphtheria.
